J Moore Construction BUILDING After earning his stripes as a carpenter in the Army, Jed Moore acquired all the skills of a residential builder before setting up his own company, J Moore Construction, to focus on multi-unit projects in Christchurch. J Moore Construction currently has no fewer than four residential multi-units underway in various Christchurch suburbs: 11-unit blocks in both Ilam and central city Madras Street, a six-unit project in Shirley and a five-unit one in Bishopdale. The portfolio also includes a number of stand-alone houses, and two being built in Fendalton. The company has had up to 35 staff at times but has settled at around 15-20, which Jed says is appropriate to the state of both the housing and the labour markets. “Things have quietened down a bit, mostly because of the rise in interest rates, and while the Reserve Bank’s recent cut will help, it won’t be for a while,” Jed says. “Still, the market for multi-unit projects is holding up pretty well, and the labour market has freed up, so there are plenty of skilled tradespeople around now – it was pretty hard for a while there.” Jed established J Moore Construction in 2012 when he was engaged as a sub-contractor in earthquake repair work, and he grew the business from there. He started his career in construction with the Army in 2002, and stayed with it for sixand-a-half years before returning to civilian life and heading off on two years of OE, comprising 18 months building houses in London, and a further six months doing the same in Canada. Jed turned his back on construction for a while when he got back to New Zealand in 2010, becoming an underground coalminer at the Roa mine in the hills behind Blackball on the West Coast. He was there when the Canterbury earthquakes struck in 2010-2011, and after two years underground, headed across the Alps to help with the Christchurch post-quake rebuild. That work launched J Moore Construction and kept it busy for the next six years, but with the repair work winding down Jed turned his attention to the more constructive side of the residential construction industry. Though he had initially taken aim at the upper-end, stand-alone market, six years ago he found himself building a multi-unit residential block for Wolfbrook Residential. With that completed very much to the client’s satisfaction, the company picked up a succession of other multi-unit projects for residential property developers, who included TAO Homes, Fusion Developments and Urban Oaks. J Moore Construction’s work was recognised this year with a bronze award in the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards, for residential blocks of more than 10 units. “That sort of thing is pretty satisfying, because it shows you’ve got the quality to go with the reputation for being fast and affordable,” Jed says. J Moore Construction has Green Status as a member of the Sitewise construction site safety organisation, and Jed says his company’s focus is “on client satisfaction and exceptional workmanship”.
