98 | Limelite Construction T T Hugh de Lacy Positive outlook seen for Canterbury Limelite Construction specialises in bespoke high-end residential construction. BUILDING Plenty of land available for housing developments in Christchurch City, Selwyn and Waimakariri districts has afforded Canterbury builders a more stable market compared to their counterparts in Auckland and Wellington, says Gurinder Nijjar of Christchurch’s LimeLite Construction. “Here in Canterbury, we’re experiencing a revitalisation in market confidence, and that is clearly driven by the abundant land and relatively affordable prices we have here,” Gurinder says. Based at Venture Place in the suburb of Middleton, LimeLite Construction is engaged in two significant multi-unit townhouse developments in Christchurch, alongside several stand-alone residential projects. “The recent decision by the Reserve Bank to lower interest rates has further invigorated the local housing market, leading to increased activity in both construction and property transactions,” Gurinder says. The launch of LimeLite Construction in 2019 marked Gurinder’s transition from a 15-year career working for employers in residential building that began with a carpentry apprenticeship in Palmerston North. His extensive experience includes pivotal work on earthquake repairs and new home builds in Christchurch following the 2010-2011 earthquakes before he established his own firm. Gurinder’s experience in building energy-efficient homes is a hallmark of LimeLite Construction, and his portfolio boasts a 10-star energy-efficient house and several eight-star and seven-star energy-efficient residences, demonstrating his commitment to sustainability and innovation in the construction industry. Operating from Rolleston in the south to Amberley in the north, LimeLite Construction covers a broad market area. Among the company’s notable projects is an 18-unit, two-storey development in Philipstown for Aldwins Properties. LimeLite Construction is also overseeing 11 stand-alone residential builds in various locations including Cashmere, Halswell, Wigram, Rolleston, Lincoln and Ravenswood. Specialising in bespoke high-end residential construction, the company has recently achieved significant milestones, including the Registered Master Builders Canterbury Regional House of the Year Award for a five-bedroom house in Lincoln. Additionally, a house in Halswell that Gurinder built for himself also won an award this year. Gurinder is optimistic about the Canterbury market, seeing that recent fluctuations in materials costs and interest rates are stabilising. “Research shows Christchurch is growing faster than the major North Island cities,” Gurinder says. “With material shortages, especially of Gib board, now behind us, the market is transitioning to a more predictable pattern.” His company is committed to its core values of client care, honesty, integrity, consistency and quality craftsmanship. It also prioritises community engagement, actively supporting and contributing to the local community. Gurinder had completed his carpentry apprenticeship while in Palmerston North in 2009 before his move to Christchurch, and his company continues to support young wouldbe builders coming up through the ranks today.
