Dunedin North Medical Centre “With a building like this it has to be a very collaborative approach. It shows we can bring a team together that can tackle any project.” COMMUNITY Cadzow Design has successfully completed the Dunedin North Medical Centre in, a complex development that required extensive collaboration with multiple specialist consultants and innovative engineering solutions. The architectural design and drafting firm, which has operated for nearly four decades, worked alongside Cook Brothers Construction to deliver the multi-level facility featuring a ground-floor pharmacy topped by a comprehensive medical centre, complete with 24 car parks and emergency vehicle access. “With a building like this it has to be a very collaborative approach. It shows we can bring a team together that can tackle any project. It was real team effort,” says Cadzow Design owner Mike Hunter. The project presented unique technical challenges – one example was the brick veneer cladding system that did not meet the New Zealand Building Code standard due to the building’s height. This necessitated engagement with a façade engineer, along with multiple specialist consultants for other project aspects, including Beca, Hadley Robinson, GeoSolve, Pedersen Read and Jacksons Engineering. Cadzow Design collaborated with Phillips Associates architects in Auckland on the initial concept design before further developing the concept and then the detailed plans, while the medical team engaged McCoy & Wixon Architects to design the internal layout for the new medical centre and doctors’ rooms. The medical centre features multiple consultation rooms, treatment and procedure facilities, and dedicated staff areas. The entire building is designed with accessibility in mind through the inclusion of a lift and stairs. A front upper tenancy provides additional commercial space, and the rear parking arrangement includes provisions for accessible parking and ambulance access. The project demonstrates Cadzow Design’s evolution from its traditional contract drafting roots towards more comprehensive architectural design services. Founded in 1985 by Bill Cadzow to specialise in contract drafting services, the company has expanded its capabilities significantly over nearly four decades of operation. Mike joined the firm in 2000 as a draftsperson, before establishing the Auckland office and eventually acquiring a 50% stake in 2017 as part of a succession plan, then taking over the business in 2023. He brings over 34 years of experience, along with New Zealand Certificate in Architectural Drafting, licensed building practitioner design certification, and professional membership of Architectural Designers New Zealand. “No job is too small or too large for us. Our team possesses the experience and knowledge to provide high-quality documentation, whatever the project,” says Mike. He says the medical centre project represents the type of complex commercial development that has increasingly formed part of Cadzow Design’s portfolio alongside its ongoing residential and alterations work. Recent completions include the new South Dunedin public library and community complex, a new pavilion house in Warkworth, Auckland, multiple apartments and mixed-use commercial buildings in Queenstown, a new house at Hanley’s Farm, Queenstown, and a 350sqm architecturally designed holiday home in Hawea. Operating from offices in both Dunedin and Auckland, the company provides services ranging from traditional contract drafting in architectural, structural and pre-cast concrete shop drawing disciplines through to full architectural design services. It utilises advanced 3D Revit and Lumion software to deliver high-quality documentation. “We listen to each client’s requirements to put their thoughts and desires on paper, and produce the outcome they want,” explains Mike. “We take a very client-focused approach.” Phone: 03 983 5500 waterfordpress.co.nz Your Business, Your Industry, Your News.
