ENGINEERING Shotover Engineering T T Kim Bowden From its base in Queenstown’s industrial hub, Shotover Engineering delivers on projects that keep construction sites moving, trucks on the road and local homes standing out. General manager Adam Matheson sums up the scope of the business simply: “We’re a general fabricating workshop. We do everything from entry-level housing through to extremely high-end housing. “We do repairs and maintenance on heavy trucks and trailers, and we look after infrastructure service companies like Waste Management, Veolia and S J Allen, Downers - companies that keep this town running.” That readiness to tackle almost any job is backed by the company’s practical set-up. It operates from purpose-built premises, prominently situated on Glenda Drive. The high-stud workshop is where the core fabrication and repair work happens, with a smaller “machine shop” for finer work on the lathe. Out the front is a retail shop stocked with bolts, trailer parts, engineering consumables, bearings, snow chains and other essentials, supported by knowledgeable staff who help walk-in customers. The company employs a 10-strong trades team, whose skills range from fine aluminium and stainless-steel work to heavy structural welding and machinery repair. “We try to do whatever anyone brings in the door,” Adam says. “It’s a very varied scope of work, it might be an office chair repair, an outdoor enclosure for their dog or the structural steelwork for a unique and complex residence. We’re not a manufacturing production line, so can adapt our skills to suit the project.” When it comes to high-end builds, a reputation for quality and precision matters. “It’s really the name and the quality of work we put out,” Adam says. That reputation is built on longevity and stable ownership. Many of the management team are also shareholders, giving them a personal stake in the company’s performance and standards. The business strengthened its capability in 2018 by acquiring JK’s Engineering in Invercargill, whose specialist equipment - including a beam-line machine, large profile cutter and a newly installed 400-tonne press brake - expands what can be delivered for local projects. “There’s been a sizable investment in machinery there, and that, in turn, helps us here,” Adam says. “It means if there’s a Queenstown project that needs that sort of capacity, we can work together with JK’s - it’s a great result for the customer.” Very often structural steelwork is buried and unseen in the build of a home. However, there is an increasing desire to expose the steelwork as a feature of the room and Shotover Engineering’s quality workmanship shines through. “Builders and architects trust us to deliver their vision, we’re proud of what the team can produce,” Adam says. From complex architectural pieces to routine trailer maintenance, Shotover Engineering’s point of difference is its consistency and capability in a diverse market. “We’ve been here 30-odd years. We’ve seen the area grow and grow, we’ve grown with it and been part of some incredible projects, but the smaller jobs bring us variety and interest too,” Adam says.
