Aotea Electric Invercargill CONTRACTING With five divisions, 45 staff and more than $150 million of completed projects over two decades, Aotea Electric Invercargill has the resources and credibility to deliver with excellence across the board. Aotea Electric Invercargill is part of a nationwide group of more than 29 companies under the Aotea Group umbrella. It has five specialist divisions: general servicing, commercial, industrial, communications and HVAC, with staff members that have skills dedicated to each department and speciality, covering Southland and The Catlins. Its tradespeople are supported by an electrical design team, which can take an initial concept through to creating 3D CAD modelling and working drawings. General manager Justin Doyle says the business currently employs eight apprentices at various stages of their trade qualification. For the apprentices, working in a larger company provides the opportunity to work across the divisions and gain exposure to a variety of skill sets before deciding where they might want to specialise. “Every year, we try and take on two apprentices so we’ve got that consistency through to being qualified. This year we’ve taken a few more on because almost every division needed one,” says Justin. Aotea Electric Invercargill has recently added heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) to its suite of services, operating under the trading name Southland Heat Pumps. “It’s another string to our bow. We are aiming to provide a one-stop-shop for our clients for anything electrical,” Justin says. “We’ve got two and a half [full-time equivalent] staff doing it now. Being electricians, they are dual-trade, which means they can do the electrical work and the heat pump work at the same time.” With 12 tradesmen working in its servicing team, Aotea Electrical Invercargill is able to provide a prompt service for all heat pump needs, either directly for private clients, or as a subcontractor to builders and others. Among the commercial electrical projects the company has been, or will be, involved in is the full electrical design-and-build for NZ Post’s new 3000sqm Invercargill facility, which was completed last year. The company was recently awarded the electrical contract for The Grace Street Project, an 800sqm community hub in South Invercargill designed to support learning, recreation, and connection, including social gatherings, a state-of-the-art youth tech hub, educational studios, co-working areas, and a community lounge. “We worked on the design for this for close to a year finalising the designs, and we will probably be on-site before Christmas,” says Justin. Aotea Electric Invercargill is a preferred contractor to Southland Hospital and many other medical facilities that require specialist expertise, as well as industrial sites such as Tiwai Point aluminium smelter, Alliance Group and South Pacific Meats. “There’s a lot of design-and-build involved; when they’re putting new machinery in we can help out with all the controls, safety, everything they need to make it compliant, while working in with other electrical engineers.” Looking ahead, Justin says the Aotea Electric Invercargill management team are closely watching the proposed Datagrid NZ $1 billion-plus data grid centre at Makarewa, just north of Invercargill, with the first stage planned to be commissioned by 2028. If consented, construction of the centre will require considerable specialist expertise, resources and collaboration, Justin says. “Throughout Aotea Group they’ve have done quite a few data centres, and the size of those are very small compared to the proposed one down here. It is huge. It is a grand scale of work and everyone’s going to need to work together.” AOTEA ELECTRIC INVERCARGILL IS PROUD TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH Moore Markhams Otago is part of a global network of offices, providing accounting and advisory services, advising local, national and international clients in the public and private sectors. 03 477 0032 otago@markhams.co.nz markhams.co.nz Queenstown Dunedin Accountants and Advisors 33 Clyde Street, Invercargill PROUDLY SUPPORTING PROVIDING INDUSTRIAL SWITCHBOARD & AUTOMATION SOLUTIONS SINCE 1968 03 2144 264 admin@clivewilson.co.nz www.clivewilson.co.nz AOTEA ELECTRIC INVERCARGILL 50 Bond Street Invercargill | www.telfer.co.nz Proud to be associated with Aotea Electric - Invercargill
