All Elements Landscape Design + Construction CONTRACTING ‘Epic’ results something to celebrate T T Kelly Deeks Wānaka’s All Elements Landscape Design + Construction is celebrating national recognition at this year’s Registered Master Landscapers Landscapes of Distinction Awards, bringing home a Silver Medal for Residential Design up to 500sqm, alongside a Gold Medal for Student Design by in-house designer Laura Thomson. Managing director Steve Pleskun says the result was especially rewarding, with the company entering the awards for the very first time. “It was pretty epic,” he says. “We’ve got a few other jobs in the pipeline that weren’t quite ready to be photographed to the standard required, so this project was the perfect one to start with. We’re definitely keen to re-enter next year.” The award-winning project made the most of a compact Wānaka site, where a lawn would have been too small to be practical. Instead, the design centred on a swimming pool installed in partnership with Narellan Pools, complemented by custom-designed decking, outdoor living features, and bespoke concrete work. A significant challenge lay in protecting a large, established oak tree, which provided natural shade and character to the property. The pool was craned in without disturbing the tree’s branches, while construction of the surrounding deck was carefully managed to avoid impact on its root system. “The tree was integral to the whole landscape,” Steve says. “Taking it away would have completely changed the area, so we designed around it.” The finished space includes an in-situ poured concrete outdoor fireplace, floating stairs, an outdoor kitchen, and automated louvres to provide shelter from Central Otago’s harsh afternoon sun. Frameless glass pool fencing ensures uninterrupted views, while cedar screening separates the pool from the driveway for privacy. Alongside the company’s silver medal, designer Laura Thomson’s gold in the student category was for a project she completed while studying. Her design, created for a challenging site with multiple level changes, was recognised for its creativity and technical skill. Laura has been with All Elements for 18 months, with Steve impressed by her initiative and design portfolio. “I wasn’t quite ready to bring on a full-time designer, but Laura has been invaluable,” Steve says. “She’s a lot more savvy with CAD and 3D rendering than I am, and together we develop ideas, which she brings to life through design. Winning gold is a huge achievement for her and a great endorsement for our team.” Steve established All Elements nearly eight years ago after moving to Wānaka from Sydney. A qualified landscape construction apprentice, he had worked on large-scale projects in Sydney’s eastern suburbs before coming to New Zealand for a ski season. Spotting opportunity in Central Otago’s booming construction industry, and seeing well-established design trends from Sydney just starting to emerge in Wānaka, he set up his own business, combining his background in high-end landscape construction with a design-led approach. Today, All Elements employs a core team of eight, growing to around 10 at peak season. The company specialises in creating outdoor spaces that are both functional and beautiful, with designs tailored to thrive in Central Otago’s challenging climate. For Steve, the Landscapes of Distinction Awards have been a motivating milestone and a platform to showcase what his team can achieve. “These awards are about celebrating quality landscaping,” he says. “To be recognised alongside the best in New Zealand is a real honour, and it’s just the beginning for us.” Pleased to provide landscaping supplies to All Elements Landscape Design and Construction UPPER CLUTHA TRANSPORT Wanaka Ph: 03 443 8221 E: wanaka@uct.co.nz W: www.uppercluthatransport.co.nz LANDSCAPE SUPPLIES HIAB HIRE BULK CARTAGE ALLIED FUEL STOP
