CONTRACTING In its more than 15 years in business, Christchurch-based Area Landscapes has built a name for delivering show-stopping outdoor projects across the region. The company’s wide scope of services include decks, fencing, concreting, and paving, as well as irrigation systems and lawn solutions, such as instant turf, hydro-seeding, and artificial grass. It has particular expertise in hard landscaping like driveways, paving, decks, planting and lawns, and its impressive portfolio includes a number of high-end projects, particularly around pools. The team also undertakes full garden preparation and planting, including plant selection and layout. Area Landscapes was started back in 2009 when founder Richard Allison was a single dad, wanting to show his son you can be successful by working hard. It was a step outside of his career as a chef. “Coming from a cheffing background, I wanted to stay creative and artistic,” he says. “I thought if I put the correct ‘ingredients’ on clients’ properties, then we could get the most amazing look from the gardens for clients.” He got started with a small Toyota Starlet, one rake, and a hammer commandeered from the neighbours, and set out tidying gardens – and it soon started to pay off, turning over $20,000 in its first year. “We must have worked every hour we could,” he says. He then met his wife, who he credits with taking him and the company to the next level. “She is the rock behind us all.” Today there are 12 staff on the team along with 10 subbies, who Richard says make the business tick. “To be honest, it is these guys who make the company rock. I have some staff who have been with me from the start – that loyalty is incredible in today’s youth.” The company prides itself on its family environment and being there for the team when needed, he says. He also credits the subcontractors for achieving the best results. “Nothing in Area Landscapes would be possible without all the help from Xteriorscapes, Narellan Pools, Knightscapes, Premier Concrete. To be honest, I just direct a really good show!” He says the team cares about its clients and producing quality work. “We care about our clients, we communicate, we stay on budget and are super transparent. Plus, we all have a lot of laughs along the way.” Richard says the pride and satisfaction of producing amazing gardens, and the team he gets to work with, are what keep him in the game. “The staff keep me going – and nearly kill me at the same time. I like helping people achieve amazing gardens, unlike corporate business, who care about their bank accounts and next project. There’s been an increase in demand for pools around the region, and also a lot more entertainment areas, outdoor kitchens and louvres etc.” The company has built a reputation for finishing jobs on time, on budget, and to a high standard. Richard says its success stems from “strong communication, attention to detail, and a genuine passion for the work”.
