| 19 REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Envision Eighty20 - Mitre 10 Mega Oamaru Oamaru store overcomes delays T Kelly Deeks A n open and collaborative approach is the basis of a long-standing relation- ship between Mitre 10 and Envision Eighty20, the design, project, and construction management company which has managed the recent development of the new Mitre 10 Mega in Oamaru’s CBD. New Zealand owned and operated Mitre 10 MEGA is a welcome addition to the Oamaru community, at double the size of the old Mitre 10 store and with an expanded offering for trade and retail customers. In the 25 years it has been in Oamaru, Mitre 10 has moved twice to larger premises to meet the needs of the growing population. The company has now invested $18 mil- lion to increase the footprint of the store to 6000sqm, comprising a purpose built retail store, indoor outdoor garden centre, a Co- lumbus Café, and trade specific drive through and yard. The CBD site has some archaeological significance to the local area due to pre-1900 occupation. Envision Eighty20 worked closely with Heritage New Zealand and the assigned archaeologists during the excavation stages. Some heritage items were discovered, the most significant of these being a very early toothpaste container. The archeological programme was the first of three delays to hit this project, which went on to be affected by the closure of the Rangitata Bridge in December, so staff and materials couldn’t make their way to Oamaru from Christchurch, then by the Covid-19 lock- down in March. “A fast-track programme was implemented to meet key fit-out milestone dates,” says Envision Eighty20 senior project manager Graeme Jones. “This necessitated the acceleration of the build- ing structure, roof, and wall cladding to allow for the construction of the post-tension floor.” A popular spot - the new Mitre 10 Mega store in Oamaru’s CBD.
