H aving faithfully served Queenstown’s locals and visitors for more than 30 years, Queenstown’s landmark shop- ping mall, O’Connells, is undergoing a $26 million redevelopment. Located on the corner of Camp and Beach Streets, the building is owned by Skyline Enterprises. Skyline Enterprises Property Manager Alastair Clifford says the project is a culmina- tion of three years’ intense planning and con- sultation with various parties and stakehold- ers involved in the process. The mall closed on February 2, 2020, with lead contractor Naylor Love beginning demolition soon after. “We are delighted to be able to give Queenstown the modern, 21st century mall it deserves. “This major redevelopment will revitalise the building inside and out and provide the town with a fresh mix of retail and dining options. Designed by Queenstown architectur- al practice McAuliffe Stevens, the striking four-storey 4,000sqm O’Connells fronts a section of Camp Street with the highest fig- ures for pedestrian footfall in the South Island adventure town. “Our architect has created a contempo- rary and exciting design, one which we are positive will cement O’Connells status as a focal point and primary shopping destination for locals and visitors for the next 30 years, and beyond.”   Beach Street is also one of the town’s busi- est thoroughfares. “The scale and profile of the O’Connells development will create a destination that’s unmissable,” says Alastair. The existing building is also being strength- ened for seismic purposes, adding a new structural frame around part of the external perimeter of the building which brings with it a whole new building appearance.
