42 | Allowing the opportunity to expand T Richard Loader I G Moore & Co, a family dairy operation, has been supplying Oceania Dairy with milk from the very start of the processing plants operation in 2014. IG Moore & Co is one of 73 suppliers within a 50km radius of Glenavy processing plant, with a strong waiting list of farmers within the same area. With Oceania’s plant completed on time for the start of the first dairy season, Ian Moore says there was never any doubt that the processing plant would work and that it would be a mutually positive supplier/processor relationship. “We still have interests in a farm that sup- plies Fonterra and appreciate the vital role Fonterra plays,” Ian says. “However for our family, Oceania Dairy provided a great opportunity to expand our dairy operation. It meant that we could in- crease production without the requirement to purchase more co-op shares.” Reflecting on the aspects he and his family most enjoy about Oceania, Ian says it is the family concept that is part of Oceania’s culture that filters throughout the operation from tanker drivers, to plant technicians to the management and that also filters through to the suppliers. “There are truly excellent staff at ODL—they are all so helpful and communicative.” IG Moore & Co operates two dairy units on Upper Hook Road Waimate—one 155 hectares and the other 230 hectares—along with sup- port land to complement the dairy operation. Farm infrastructure includes a 54-bale rotary and 36-bale herringbone—both with Automatic Cup Removers. The land is easy rolling silt loams over clay base, providing good water holding capacity and generally summer safe. Cloud cover regularly slows down evapo- transpiration— the process by which water is transferred from the land to the atmosphere by evaporation from the soil and other surfac- es and by transpiration from plants. “We usually get through the summers ok, The farms are home to 440 and 640 cows, respectively across the two farms, and predominantly Friesian and Jersey cross herd. The farms are all dry land, so our farming approach needs to be conservative. We aim to achieve 1100kgMS per hectare.” The farms are home to 440 and 640 cows, respectively across the two farms, and pre- dominantly Friesian and Jersey cross herd. Ian’s farming journey started in 1972 with his parents and says he always preferred cattle to sheep. “I saw cows in other parts of New Zealand and figured we could milk here also without irrigation. “Dry land dairy was considered a ‘no go’ but now ten more dry land farms have joined us under the Hunters Hills. Two of our sons, Hamish and Greig, and their partners Keri and Rachel, love dairying and have joined Glenda and me in the farming business. They have more energy and more drive and passion to succeed in the dairy business.” Ian says that during the CV19 lockdown it was simply business as usual. “Protocols at the dairy sheds were clearly set out and we experienced no problems.” Family owned and operated along with excellent and long-standing staff it is IG Moore & Co’s family spirit that connects so well with Oceania Dairy.
