Business South October 2020

Powderline owner John Sievwright is excited to be adding thermoplastic to the company’s range of services which includes conventional powder coating of structural steel components. The ability to have these two services available opens a whole new world of service to the commercial sectors, John says. The Invercargill business has been experiencing extremely strong demand since it launched two-and-a-half years ago. Powderline operates three ovens, the largest being 8.6 metres long, 2.5 metres wide and 2.2 metres high; John believes this is by far the biggest oven in the south. The capacity of Powderline’s largest oven means the items it can offer powder coating for the likes of large beams, panelling or numerous other metal components used in commercial construction. This coating systems offers enhanced long-term corrosion protection, high impact strength and excellent exterior weathering in some of the harshest conditions imaginable. This includes exceptional resistance against salt spray, humidity, most common chemicals, acids, and alkalis. Thermoplastics are solvent free, have excellent substrate adhesion without the need for primers, superior chip resistance and will provide superior substrate protection even to extreme sub zero temperatures. These properties make the coating an excellent option over a wide range of situations, from dairy and food applications to heavy industrial, chemical and marine environments. A considerable advantage of both options over painting is the much faster turnaround in addition to eliminating weather factors, especially during winter, which in turn can result in faster completion for construction projects. “We can offer a same-day service, compared to the usual turnaround of three days.” Since opening, businesses in Southland and beyond have been taking advantage of Powderline's quality and fast turnaround. This demand for Powderline’s services has resulted in strong growth and a corresponding increase in staff since it opened. John has seen an increasing trend towards powder coating on items that would previously have been painted because of the speed, cost-effectiveness and durability. Powder coating is a popular option for items such as metal gates and smaller items from jewellery to decorative outdoor furniture and for a variety of automotive applications including “amazing” special effects and chrome effect mag wheels. Powder coating involves the electrostatic application of finely ground, dry paint film to a specially prepared metal surface. The subsequent heating of this film to 220°C allows the powder to melt, flow out and cure to a tough, smooth finish. Powderline expands services POWDERLINE LEADERS IN POWDER COATING INNOVATION
