ARCHITECTURE Sheppard + Rout Architects The five award winning projects are as follows: Paragon Apartments – Housing (Multi Unit) Award The first base isolated, low damage design apartment high rise constructed in New Zealand, the 30 metre high Armagh apartment block is also the first high-rise apartment tower built in Christchurch since the 2011 earthquake. The exceptionally high quality apartments’ design combines spaciousness with privacy, security and comfort. Jury’s comments: “This carefully controlled development in Armagh Street exudes so- phistication and grandeur, and fully satisfies the client’s brief for structural and personal security.” Terrace House (with C Nott Architecture) – Housing Award Associate Director’s own home (Matt Gutsell). Matt and his wife, Wendy Lewell of C Nott Architecture, designed their home together. The 170sqm home, oriented north-east, steps gracefully down its sloping site, connect- ing effortlessly with its immediate context and natural environment (including mature fruit trees). Connections through the home have been used to create volume and a sense of space. Stack ventilation and other simple passive house principals have been used to create a warm and friendly year-round home. Jury’s comments: “A clear and considered response to this hill-side site.” Dark Sky Project – Public Architecture Award Located at Lake Tekapo, the design of this astrotourism facility reflects key features of both landscape and natural environment and was developed in close consultation with Ngāi Tahu and the local Rūnanga. Jury’s comments: “Dark Sky is a most welcome facility for Tekapo/Takapō, with an architectural aesthetic that will stand the test of time, and space.” Hawthorne Street House – Housing Award Director’s own home (Tim Dagg). This is an uplifting light-filled home: the palette is simple and natural, the form streamlined. It has been carefully considered to fit seamlessly within site constraints. Judge’s comments: “A palette of robust ma- terials creates a cosy and relaxed atmosphere, and beautifully detailed joinery articulates but does not dominate interior spaces.” ANZCO Foods Head Office (with Jasmax and Three Sixty Architecture) – Interior Architecture Award Sheppard + Rout designed the office build- ing and in coordination with the interior archi- tects, including stairs, lift and entry spaces. Judge’s comments: “A sophisticated interior alludes to the client’s industry in a tasteful and unpreten- tious manner.”
