16 | Watts and Hughes Construction REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT T T Kelly Deeks Airport partnership ready to fly The new three-tenancy food and beverage building at trade and services precinct Harvard Park. A revitalised relationship for industry leading Watts and Hughes Construction has seen the company partnering with Christchurch International Airport to deliver a new three-tenancy food and beverage building at trade and services precinct Harvard Park. Watts and Hughes general manager Craig Brown says working with the airport was one of the main highlights of this project. “We’ve worked hard over the past couple of years to open up that work stream for us and it went very well,” he says. “It’s the first job we’ve completed for the airport for a number of years, but the land bank they have out there and the type of projects they are putting on the market are our bread and butter projects - large precast concrete and steel construction are the projects we are targeting.” Watts and Hughes had already built the Taco Bell within Harvard Park for one of its key clients Restaurant Brands, and came back to site at the end of 2022 to start on the food and beverage building. With its high profile location on State Highway 1, traffic management was a key factor in this project and some of the work was completed out of hours to ensure no delays on the highway. Silty ground conditions were worked through with the airport and an engineer, but the rest of the build was straightforward precast concrete external and internal partition walls and structural steel. “We were working at an operational airport and although we weren’t working air side, our client had slightly different health and safety requirements from other clients. In our operation we’ve always maintained a high level of health and safety and an impeccable site safety record, so that worked in well with the airport. When the airport or any other client has particular specifications, we can provide that level of flexibility.” Watts and Hughes turns 40 years old next year and arrived in Christchurch in 2011 following the earthquake. Catering to all client needs from initial concepts and design to project management, implementation, and full construction, Watts and Hughes has branched out across the South Island to offer the full spectrum of construction services with a focus on quality construction delivered on time. Watts and Hughes has been busy in Christchurch during the past five years as it continues to look after some important key clients including the Ministry of Education, “The type of projects they are putting on the market are our bread and butter projects - large precast concrete and steel construction are the projects we are targeting.” Restaurant Brands, and Woolworths, as well as completing developments of its own. This year at Rolleston College, Watts and Hughes is constructing a design and build expansion project, delivering a new teaching block and gymnasium extension to the fully operational school. Multiple projects have been delivered for Restaurant Brands’ including Taco Bell and KFC works with South Island wide refurbishments to existing KFC restaurants. Woolworths features heavily in Watts and Hughes portfolio and the company is now completing a new build 5-star Greenstar Countdown supermarket at Waimakariri Junction in Kaiapoi. Watts and Hughes built and retained ownership of the 4-star Greenstar rated Countdown supermarket at Belfast in 2022, and has another phase of that development coming up in 2024 and 2025, with a new medical practice and a 20-unit retail development coming soon. Watts and Hughes looks forward to a continued and successful relationship with Christchurch International Airport.
