REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT burton, attract new exciting businesses to the district that add value to the community, collaborate with and learn from the all people involved in these businesses and to help promote job creation.” Bringing quality businesses to Ashburton not only helped to meet a local need, it also helped to improve customer experiences by setting great examples and demonstrating new ideas. “With establishing new businesses in new or refurbished, quality properties, Tricroft aims to help keep business local and prevent spending from leaving the district – quality providers and customer experiences can be found at home.” Tony says towns across New Zealand were redefining themselves and communities were changing and had different needs. “Industries are changing the way they do business and general trends are constantly evolving. Constant change makes it difficult to pinpoint how a town should develop into the future.” Accessible parking was key for new developement, and for businesses, particularly retailers, creating open plan spaces to meet customer needs. Tony says that this requires larger development spaces and highly functional logistical access. “Obtaining and making use of this type of ‘space’ is challenging. “Overlaying this, aligning tenant’s requirements and development opportunities with council planning rules can be challenging.” It was important to acknowledge the district’s agricultural foundations into the future. “Mid Canterbury is a national and international leader with regard to primary production. This will always lead to growth and opportunities. “The key will be to seek collaboration or opportunities within supply chains, business partnerships and integration.” The regions provided highly diverse industries and business models, which helped provide stable economic conditions, a major reason why large SMEs and corporates seek to establish their businesses in the regions, he said. However, these businesses and developers require regulatory conditions that supported further growth and investment.
