Andrew Haulage 2011 T T Richard Loader FORESTRY Balclutha based Andrew Haulage 2011 Ltd’s high standard of work building forestry roading for Rayonier Matariki Forests has been rewarded with success at this year’s Southern Wood Council Awards held in March. The company was nominated for the Forest Environmental Management Excellence Award, by Rayonier Matariki Forests, who it has a long-standing business relationship with. Managing Director Colin Caltreaux says it was an honour to have Rayonier acknowledge the very high standard of work that his team has done building forestry roading over the years. “The forestry roading team is led by my son Troy, and I believe we were successful because of the methodology that the crew follow, and their high standard of workmanship. We’ve been developing forestry roading for Rayonier since 1992 and we’ve established proven systems for how the work is done safely and with a focus on environmental management.” It was the first time Andrew Haulage had won the award and Colin says it was an amazing lift for the whole team. “We didn’t realise that we were an Award Finalist, and only became aware that we’d won the award when I received a txt congratulating us at 8. 30pm on the night of the awards function. It took us by surprise really. For the company, it means we can add that award to all our communications and quotes, so people know they are working with a successful and award-winning company. People do recognise that sort of thing.” In addition to success at the Southern Wood Council awards, Troy has also been crowned Champion at the 2023 Civil Contractors National Excavator Competition, making him a three times national champion. With past successes in 2018 and 2021, Troy is the only operator in New Zealand to have won the title three times. Andrew Haulage’s roots go back over sixty years when it was founded by Don Andrew. Colin, his wife Lynne and son Kieran took the business over in 2011 when it had a team of 17 staff. Since taking over business, the Caltreaux family has grown the size and operational scope of the business. “We now have a team of fifty-two,” says Colin. “When we took the business over, the region was still recovering from the GFC, and the bulk of our work focused on dairy conversions, looking after the farming community generally, and supporting Rayonier. “We continue to support those sectors, but we’ve become heavily involved in civil work and do a lot of work for the Clutha District Council undertaking major drainage projects. We’re currently in the middle of laying eighteen kilometres of pipeline between Milton and Waihola. We also support local lines company PowerNet, assisting when powerline poles need maintenance or repairs. We look after the difficult areas up and down hillsides. Since 2011 we’ve also had wood chippers, producing bio-fuels for customers to use in their boilers.” From its Balclutha base, the company operates throughout Otago and Southland, and supplies certified concrete from a batching plant at its yard in Balclutha. Colin acknowledges that he is ‘old school’ and that his handshake is his bond. “Being open and honest with people has been key. We strive to do the job properly the first time. It is hard out there at the moment and you just can’t afford to go back and do it twice.” Kakapuaka, Balclutha Ph 034182594 tom@hollowstimber.co.nz • Building Timbers • Decking • Fencing Materials • Posts & Strainers • Retaining Wall Timber • Nails & Screws • Plywood Frameless Glass Balustrades Splashbacks Frameless Glass Showers Retro-fit Double Glazing Windscreen Replacement & Repairs P 03 418 0777 | 30 Charlotte St, Balclutha | E info@balcluthaglass.co.nz Hose Solutions HEWITT’S TRACTOR SERVICES Mechanical and Hydraulic Repairs on Farm and Workshop Services 118 Clyde St, Balclutha (03) 418-1348 hewitts.co.nz FOR ALL YOUR ® Altogether Better™
