56 | DEVELOPMENT CMT Group NZ T T Karen Phelps Under-utilised space transformed CMT is pleased to have played a part in delivering Kāinga Ora’s successful Brewer/ Pahuahi Street development in Blenheim. The project won a merit award in the Kāinga Ora Homes and Communities Community and Affordable Housing Property category at this year’s Property Council New Zealand Rider Levett Bucknall Property Industry Awards. CMT Group helped transform an under utilised space in Blenheim into 14 brand-new, warm and dry homes. CMT marketing manager Michelle Burns says this development breathed new life into the area and provided much-needed housing solutions to local residents. The 14 homes feature a blend of weatherboard and brick exteriors, modern landscaping, and enclosed yards. Each residence comprises two bedrooms, a modern kitchen and bathroom, an open-concept living space, and more. The project, initially estimated at $4.3 million, took 14 months to complete. The project’s scope encompassed demolition, underground works, civil engineering, building, carpentry, concrete works, and more. Notably, it involved the demolition of original housing, marking the largest government housing project in Blenheim in decades. “This is our biggest project to date, and everyone at CMT Group played a role,” says Jeff Valk, construction manager at CMT Group. Andrew Wilson, Project Manager at Kāinga Ora, expressed his gratitude to the CMT Group team personally thanking them for their collaboration, commitment, professionalism and workmanship throughout the delivery of Brewer/Pahuahi Street. “I know the business and the wider community are very excited about this development and you should all be very proud on delivering fourteen warm, dry, fully universal design, 6 Homestar and safe homes,” he stated. Kenley Faulkner, CMT Group civil team manager, acknowledged the challenges faced during the project, such as a high groundwater table and tight working conditions and likewise praised the team’s collective effort, emphasising that “together everyone does achieve more.” The success of the Brewer/Pahuahi Street project was also attributed to efficient logistics management. The CMT Group utilised its extensive warehouse to ensure materials were readily available on-site. The project typically involved 25 to 40 people on-site daily, underscoring the scale and complexity of the endeavour. Scott Guthrie, CMT Group site construction manager, brought invaluable experience to the project, assuaging concerns among younger builders and effectively managing stock during COVID-19-related delays. Michelle says that the merit award for the project highlights the CMT Group team’s dedication to providing housing solutions that improve lives and communities.
