Hunter & Craig Building & Design BUILDING Central Otago architectural design and build company Hunter & Craig has taken out a range of accolades at the 2023 House of the Year competition including a rare ‘special award’ only bestowed by the judges for a house worthy of extraordinary recognition. The project in Bannockburn was deemed by judges to be an ‘epic marvel, skilfully carved into the rock and meeting challenging resource consent requirements’. The home also won the Supreme House of the Year – Under $1 Million, Altus Window Systems New Home $750,000 – $1 million category, a Gold Award and made it into the Top 100. Hunter & Craig director, Shaun Hunter, says that the home, nestled high on the Cairnmuir Hills in an area of significant natural landscape, had very rigorous resource consent constraints which dictated the house should not be seen from public spaces and that the natural skyline be preserved. This made the design brief challenging with the home weaved amongst rocks and schist tors up to six metres high and contained within a defined excavation to minimise site disturbance. “For our designers, this was a challenging site to work with, coupled with the client’s specific spatial needs and a long list of details around the cladding, interior spaces and finishes,” explains Shaun. The 189sqm two-bedroom home plus studio frames and highlights the special features, including a glass corner shower that offers views of the rock. The floorplan has two sections, each with a bedroom and a bathroom, connected by a long gallery running between outcrops. Other unique features include a concealed front door and window blinds that disappear into the wall frame. To give some indication of the challenges the 20m long entrance runs though rocks that are up to four metres high. This meant that Hunter & Craig had to build in very restrictive conditions and, at times, within 50mm of the cut rock walls. Shaun says Hunter & Craig modified some of its standard construction methods to enable construction to occur in a way that enabled continuous site and house access. This required thinking ahead three to four months. An example was the need to semi clad some of the walls, before standing them up, so the team didn’t have to work against the rock. Tight timelines and Covid lockdowns added to the mix. As testament to the skill of the Hunter & Craig team, the construction was completed in just under six months. It’s an example of where Hunter & Craig can excel by offering clients a suite of design and construction solutions, from architectural concepts, complete working drawings and building consents, to complete builds and project management with dedicated project planners, qualified master builders and carefully selected trades. Shaun says that by designing in-house the team can work in collaboration resulting in smarter design, unique solutions and better construction outcomes. “We tailor our services for each project and can handle every element of the build process from start to finish,” says Shaun who leads the build team. Shaun joined forces with Derek Craig, who heads the company’s design team, in 2013 to form Hunter & Craig. Based in Cromwell, Hunter & Craig designs for clients from around New Zealand and builds distinctive homes in Cromwell, Wanaka, Alexandra, Bannockburn and Arrowtown.
