BUILDING Queenstown-based building company, Hayes Built Ltd, is a new home and renovation specialist, whose commitment to mentoring the next generation of builders is as strong as their reputation for high-quality craftsmanship. This is evident in the success of third-year apprentice, Tom Neilson, who is the regional winner of the New Zealand Certified Builders, Apprentice Challenge for Central Otago. Held in April at Southern Lakes ITM, the competition saw local apprentices test their skills by building a picnic table from scratch according to specific plans and tolerances. The competition was fierce, with only nine points separating the top three contestants. Tom’s victory is a testament to the quality of mentorship provided by Hayes Built Ltd, as well as his own dedication and skill. Hayes Built owner and licensed building practitioner, Chris Hayes, says Tom is a valued member of his build team, which consists of nine qualified carpenters and six apprentices, servicing construction projects across the Wakatipu Basin, Wanaka and Cromwell. A one-stop-shop for all construction needs including light commercial, Hayes Built offers a comprehensive range of build services. Additionally, they provide decking, roofing and slab foundation services, which enable them to oversee projects from concept to completion with consistent quality control. “Attention to detail, quality craftsmanship and the ability to handle multiple, complex projects at the same time is what we’re all about,” says Chris. “Being able to do our own roofing and foundations helps keep the build seamless and within budget.” Hayes Built is also committed to fostering strong relationships with local subcontractors and architectural designers, often getting involved in projects from the design stage. Hayes Built has completed a variety of noteworthy projects, each showcasing their versatility, and ability to deliver on complex briefs. One such is the renovation of Pyke Lodge, owned by Ngāi Tahu. This Hollyford Valley tourist lodge, which supports guided walks along the Hollyford Track, required significant upgrades, including the transformation of four bunk rooms into two bedrooms with ensuites. It also involved extending the building to provide a further two bedrooms with ensuites, full underfloor insulation and replacement of roofing, flashings and guttering plus covered veranda and separate woodshed. “This was a fly-in fly-out situation, working 10 on and three off, during a Fiordland winter. So, it rained seven days out of 10, if we’re lucky,” recalls Chris. Building materials were flown in via helicopter and the build team worked through rain, hail, hoar frost and late nights to get the job done. We had a tight deadline. Starting in mid-May we had until the end of October to get it all done, and we were finished at the beginning of October.” Soaked to the bone and with tools dead from the elements, this was a challenging build, but a very rewarding one says Chris. “It was a good time despite the challenges, and we’d be happy to do more there in future.” Another significant project is a high-end new build currently underway at The Heights in Wanaka. This contemporary family home, designed by RWA Architecture of Marlborough, features 29 tonnes of schist stonework and Abodo cladding, plus European style timber joinery. The 240sqm home has 140mmthick walls and Terra Lana insulation, ducted heat pumps and a wood burner for heating. A third notable project is a large-scale renovation of a 1950s’ era bach in Frankton, which the Hayes Built team is transforming into a modern functional family home. Designed to capture the property’s spectacular lake views, this project involves working with older structures on a steep slope site and is a prime example of Hayes Built’s abilities to handle challenging renovations of any scale. is proud to support Hayes Built 0800 BESPOKE (0800 237 765) Your site-prep experts for residential earthworks PROUD TO SUPPORT HAYES BUILT 021 161 0142 gooddirtearthworks@gmail.com gooddirtearthworks
