| 113 Wanaka Tiny House Factory BUILDING Precision anddetail After eighteen years in the business well-known Wanaka interior architect Melanie Craig knew how much more e icient it would be to have the joinery manufactured in-house. Two years ago The Joinery Crew opened the doors of its purpose-built factory at 21 Enterprise Drive, Wanaka, co-owned by Melanie, her husband Bradley, and their Head Detailer Anil Kumar who runs the factory. “He’s the boss basically,” says Bradley. “He does all the detailing on his computer which talks to our state-of-the-art CNC machine. We’ve got the latest precision Italian cutting and edging technology which guarantees a perfect it and inish,” says Bradley. With premises built to house all the machinery and space they need for good production capacity The Joinery Crew can handle whatever comes their way, whether it’s the joinery for a 664m2 architectural build or, equally complex but on a smaller scale, the interior needs of a tiny house. “We’ve got a team of eight from all over the world who are experts in their ield whether it’s high-end joinery, cabinetry, or furniture-making,’ says Bradley. Their Italian precision machinery and in-house expertise dovetails very well with the Wanaka and Nelson Tiny House Factories’ need for absolute accuracy in builds where space is at a premium. The Joinery Crew team enjoy the challenge of detailing and building cupboards that may come out of corners, with hardware that may need to be hidden, then delivering it onsite ready to install. “Between Melanie and Anil they have over 25 years of experience from the design side to the detailing side, so they can take the client’s vision, design it and model it in 3D on the computer for the client to really see it before we begin production,” says Bradley. With the joinery factory right next door Melanie can sort out complex joinery requirements, which are often the reason she was chosen to do the design in the irst place, in person, easily and e iciently. What The Joinery Crew also look forward to is clients independently bringing their plans to them ready to be priced, detailed, modelled in 3D and built, ready for installation. The clients, regardless of who they used for the design, can have peace of mind that everyone’s on the same page when it comes to the successful execution of their plans, whether it’s for a wardrobe, a kitchen, bathroom joinery, or a pull-out pantry for a tiny home. Midst a general shortage of looring installers in the Central Otago region and particularly a lack of young people in the trade Sam decided the time was right for that to change for the better he explains. “I wanted to train people to the high standard I was taught by the Allied Flooring Trade Institute, not necessarily employ people with previous experience and possibly bad habits.” The exception is highly experienced loor installer Bryce Cleveland, Sam’s fellow director in the company. Sam considers him to be the best commercial loor installer in the country with the depth of practical knowledge that goes with it. Combined they provide the foundation for an e icient and professional team, Bryce’s skills are well complemented by Sam’s focus on meeting all the regulations whether they’re to do with loor levels or wearing the correct PPE and using the correct tools to deal with asbestos or silica. The net result is that “we keep our sta safe and our work doesn’t get call backs essentially,” says Sam. 32 years old himself, Sam is staying true to his word as he now has apprentices aged 29 and 30 years in the team. He’s proud to o er a happy, young work environment and he looks forward to expanding and o ering work to more of the people who approach him. All Flooring specialises in resilient looring which is essentially everything that isn’t carpet, and Sam’s preference is to use eco-friendly glues and adhesives, and organic materials where possible. “Cork is the number one thing I like to install because it’s eco-friendly and I think it’s got great properties,” says Sam. Sam loves the scale and challenge that comes with commercial jobs and particularly enjoys working with the Wanaka Tiny House Factory because of their sustainability factor. All Flooring’s approach is to take on the job and project manage it themselves from start to inish. “We’re not just contractors, we get heavily involved in the scheduling and I do lots of site visits no matter what size the job is.” Whether it’s a tiny home or a commercial building All Flooring is always looking for the most cost-e ective solution to the looring needs of the job.
