Noteworthy about their working relationship is the nearly 20 years’ difference in age between them; Jared previously worked as a high school Gateway student under Jarrod, who was a foreman for another company at the time. After Jarrod started his own business and Jared had qualified and worked on his own account for a time, the pair struck up a conversation, saw the advantages of joining forces, and established the company in early 2021. Jarrod says the partnership is working well, with Jared bringing energy and complementary skills to create a more rounded team than a sole owner would. “We still do everything from the concrete pad to building frames, roofing and even tiling to maintain the quality.” The business today employs six trade staff, of which two are apprentices, including a female apprentice who brings a positive influence to J-Squared’s culture. The past year has seen good growth in the business for significant projects undertaken, especially with the completion of a two-level gymnasium building and a new bespoke-designed house on top of regular work such as renovations, additions and alterations. A notable feature of J-Squared’s work, influenced by Jarrod’s experience with a former employer, is using LVL (laminated veneer lumber) in the timber elements such as wall framing and floor joists instead of standard, pre-fabricated, treated pinus radiata. Although less commonly used and slightly more expensive, LVL has a number of benefits, as well as highlighting Jarrod and Jared’s passion for quality, innovation and efficiency that ultimately benefits the client in addition to producing a high-quality product. “The fact that we are using LVL is you don’t have to spend as much time straightening the walls, it holds everything straight. It also streamlines the placement of the interior ‘gib’ wall board and most tellingly, J-Squared’s gib-stopper prices jobs at a different rate because of the quality of the framing and the straightness of the walls, he adds. The new house was designed by Invercargill studio Varcoe McMillan, with J- Squared being recommended to the client by a referral.
