Hawkins Construction is the main contractor on the multi-million-dollar development, which will feature a 10-classroom science block, designed to provide specialised teaching spaces equipped with modern facilities. Designed by Athfield Architects, the new science block will not only offer state-of- the-art classroom space, but will also feature indoor breakout areas for tutorials and leisure during breaks. The brick-and plaster-clad science block ensures a conducive learning environment that the school is appreciative of, says Lincoln High principal Adrian Fastier. “It’s going to enhance the school significantly...it will be a great place for students to learn,” he says. “Being able to teach in a modern facility with the right equipment and set-up makes such a difference in preparing our students for life beyond school, tertiary study and employment in that area.” Adrian, who previously served as deputy principal at Cashmere High School, brings his experience and enthusiasm to Lincoln High, which has a roll of over 1400 students. The new science block is set to accommodate this increase, addressing both the immediate and future needs of the school. The project involves the demolition of an old building that housed the administration block and several classrooms. This building was deemed unsafe due to earthquake-related structural concerns. The construction project commenced in late May 2024 and is slated for completion over a 16-month period, targeting the end of 2025. In the interim, Lincoln High School’s current science classrooms remain in use, with plans to repurpose them to accommodate further roll growth. Hawkins Construction has previously built the school’s temporary administration block and relocated several buildings in preparation for the new development. “We’re very much appreciative of Hawkins Construction’s ability to manage this project and minimise disruption to the school,” says Adrian. “They’ve been great to work with, very communicative and good with on-site health and safety protocol.” This construction marks a significant step for the school, promising to enhance both its infrastructure and educational environment, while the funding support from the Ministry of Education was pivotal in bringing it to fruition. “We do have a growing roll and it’s no secret Selwyn District’s population is growing pretty quickly, so we’re pleased the Ministry could see the merit in investing in our school,” says Adrian. The development aligns with the school’s commitment to providing high-quality facilities that foster a positive and effective educational experience. Adrian underscores the Government’s role in prioritising the infrastructural needs of schools across New Zealand. “There are a lot of schools in New Zealand that do need and would love property refurbishment, so it is important if we are to have enough of the right sort of classrooms for a quality education.” The new science block at Lincoln High School represents partnership, progress, and commitment to providing an exceptional educational environment. “It’s going to enhance the school significantly...it will be a great place for students to learn.”
