The efficient delivery of turn-key design and build projects utilising its own proven structural steel design systems and in-house design team are the key cornerstones of success for Timaru’s XL Structural Steel. The company has continually honed and perfected its processes and systems since the ‘90s when, as part of the Alpine Building’s brand, customers began requesting the construction of larger commercial and agricultural buildings. “Alpine Buildings was one of the pioneers in kitset buildings, mainly designed for the agricultural sector,” says Project Consultant Vern Lawry. “The need for larger commercial, industrial and agricultural buildings using a structural steel system eventually resulted in Alpine Buildings launching the XL Structural Steel brand.” With a focus on buildings ranging from 1000sqm to 10,000sqm, XL Structural Steel’s aim is to enable businesses to reach their next stage of growth by delivering a full turn-key solution that meets their needs now and into the future. “The kinds of projects that we become involved in include large commercial aircraft hangars, such as the recent project for Twilight Hangars at Alexandra Airport, heavy machinery workshops and factory facilities, warehouses and distribution centres. Those buildings may also have offices attached. We’re currently doing a number of projects in Southland for bulk storage facilities.” As one of XL Structural Steel’s Project Consultants, Vern works closely with the client early in the project to understand their key requirements and subtle design details, then works with the XL team to deliver on the vision. “We always involve the design aspect in our projects because we have our own efficient structural steel system. We deliver a complete turn-key project from concept, planning, design and construction including cladding. The project will typically include offices complete with cladding. We import our own raw steel and fabricate it either in Timaru or our Waikato facility. Having our own in-house design team enables us to provide a full consent package, establish all the other professional consultants required for a project, and ensure the consent process goes smoothly, saving the client’s involvement in those aspects.” The project for Twilight Hangars, purpose built for Tin Shed Aviation, an aircraft restoration and maintenance business, showcases XL Structural Steel’s focus on quality and efficiency. “When the client approached us to design and build a complete hangar package, we pulled that together but the most efficient and cost effective way of delivering the building was to tender out the carpentry aspect locally. As a result, Alexandra based Greg Chapman Building was successful in that tender process. The key advantage is that XL did what it specialises in, which is the steel structure, cladding and roofing, while local trades undertook the carpentry works including joinery and feature office cladding. The ability to leverage off local contractors minimises overhead such as project management and travel; savings which we could pass on to our client.” With its headquarters is in Timaru, which includes a steel fabrication facility, XL Structural Steel also includes an office and installation team based in Gore. With a steel fabrication facility in the Waikato, the team provides nationwide coverage. Strength through consultation and design
