CODC - HEB Construction: Cromwell Rising Main “Central Otago is experiencing a lot of growth. So the pipeline will meet the growth needs of the Cromwell catchment.” The Central Otago District Council’s (CODC) $6.4 million Cromwell Rising Main project is entering its final stages, with 90% of the total pipe length now installed. The significant upgrade to Cromwell’s water supply infrastructure is set to address the needs of the rapidly expanding township and surrounding areas. “Central Otago is experiencing a lot of growth. So the pipeline will meet the growth needs of the Cromwell catchment,” explains CODC project manager Josh Wight. The project, which began in February, is the first stage of a comprehensive programme designed to provide a fully compliant water supply for Cromwell. The initial phase involves the installation of a dedicated 630mm-diameter pipe main, stretching from the existing bore field near Lake Dunstan’s Alpha Street Reserve to the Cromwell Reservoir site above the State Highway 6/State Highway 8b intersection. Josh says that the commissioning phase is scheduled to begin in September, with completion expected by October. He adds that the project team is already looking ahead to the second stage, which will involve constructing a new treatment plant and upgrading the bore field. “We’re currently in the design phase for stage two. This will provide more modern treatment facilities to meet the latest drinking water standards.” The extensive pipe network, which runs along Neplusultra St, Barry Avenue, Lode Lane, through the Cromwell Mall, and across to State Highways 8B and 6 before reaching the reservoir site on McNab Road, has been a complex undertaking. Excavation work has been carried out in sections, starting from the Alpha Street reserve and McNab Road, and progressing into the town centre. While the project has caused some disruption to the Cromwell community, Josh says measures have been taken to minimise inconvenience. “Works have been constrained to road verges and footpaths where possible. Traffic management, including some detours, has been in place to allow for the pipeline installation.” REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT The CODC and its contractor, HEB Construction has maintained open communication with affected residents and businesses throughout the project. This proactive approach has helped to manage expectations and address concerns as they arise, says Josh. Josh places the Cromwell Rising Main project in the context of the region’s broader water infrastructure improvements, saying that council turned on the taps at the new Lake Dunstan Water Supply in 2023, which serves Alexandra and Clyde. Work for Cromwell has taken longer while Council makes sure that what is built is future-proofed to meet the growth needs of Cromwell. Josh says the second stage of the programme, which includes the construction of a new treatment plant at the reservoir site and upgrades to the bores, is expected to be tendered later this year. As the project moves forward, the CODC acknowledges the inconvenience caused to residents and businesses. Josh expresses gratitude for the community’s understanding: “We appreciate people’s patience during the disruption as we complete this significant infrastructure project for Cromwell.” NIGEL MCKINLAY 20 ALPHA STREET CROMWELL | 022 340 1060 • 03 445 3000 | NIGEL@CENTRALDRAINLAYING.CO.NZ SUBDIVISION CONSTRUCTION · UNDERGROUND UTILITIES · CIVIL DRAINLAYING · ELECTROFUSION PE WELDING · POTABLE WATER RETICULATION INCLUDING TESTING & CHLORINATION · SANITARY SEWER · STORMWATER · SEPTIC TANK & LIFESTYLE SEPTIC SYSTEMS · EFFLUENT DESIGN · PUMP STATIONS · CONFINED SPACE ENTRY · CONSTRUCTION / MAINTENANCE OF ALL COMMERCIAL, DOMESTIC DRAINAGE & POTABLE WATER SYSTEMS CERTIFIED DRAINLAYERS | NATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN WATER RETICULATION APPROVED CONTRACTOR FOR QLDC & CODC UNDERGROUND NETWORK 0800 109 101 info@whitestone.co.nz www.whitestone.co.nz Proudly supporting Heb Construction Our Central Otago Based Team Cover: Civil Construction Landscape Construction Landscape Maintenance Vegetation Management 027 836 3633
