T T from page 18 Wakatipu Transport Alliance - Kā Huanui a Tāhuna REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT “Queenstown is the jewel in New Zealand’s tourism crown. Everyone who comes to New Zealand visits Queenstown, and so now the jewel has been brightly polished.” “We engaged with all the parties to keep them informed, and worked with them when we were working outside of their front door, to find an acceptable solution to minimise disruption to their business.” A further complexity was that the Town Centre had developed organically over its history, which presented the alliance with many underground unknowns. “It wasn’t until we opened the ground up that we discovered what was actually there. The risk that presented was the spiderweb of underground utilities, the complexity of untangling all of that, and upgrading and constructing new in what is a very constrained town. “We had to do a lot of redesigning on the fly with utilities and three-waters assets, before we could commence the above-ground assets.” Edward makes the point that if you tried to undertake a project of this magnitude in the peak of Queenstown tourism, closing down portions of the CBD to facilitate the work would have presented more challenges with all the local businesses and stakeholders involved. “You look at the outcome that has been achieved, which is outstanding, and it is validation for the project owners having the vision to get the design done and really upgrade Queenstown CBD and bring it onto the world stage. “Queenstown is the jewel in New Zealand’s tourism crown. Everyone who comes to New Zealand visits Queenstown, and so now the jewel has been brightly polished.” Edward acknowledges the collaborative alliance model, which brought everybody together, for the successful completion of the project. “We have the client, the contractor, the designer all working under one roof as one team, under the brand of Kā Huanui a Tāhuna, and helping to overcome challenges as they were presented.” “Kā Huanui a Tāhuna was created to deliver a well-considered programme of capital projects on behalf of Queenstown Lakes District Council and NZTA. “Other projects include Lakeview Development, Queenstown Town Centre Arterial Stage 1, and we have just recently commenced the Queenstown Upgrade for NZTA, which is primarily State Highway work. “ At this stage, the current completion date for all alliance works is April 2028, with the QLDC final project Arterial Stage 1 due to be completed next year.” We are proud to be the paving contractor for the Whakatipu Transport Programme Alliance & the historic core street upgrade and Lakeview project – completing specialised laying of natural stone paving on Steintec bedding system.
