28 | Miner optimistic on legislation changes Bathurst Resources CEO Richard Tacon says Bathurst already operates successfully within the environment without adverse impact. T T from page 26 Bathurst Resources REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT While those opposed to the Bill argue that a streamlined process is an attempt to override environmental protections, Richard points out that Bathurst Resources already operates successfully within the environment without adverse impact. “It is in our best interests as good corporate citizens to maintain or improve on those high environmental standards.” Despite its challenging start in New Zealand, ASX listed Bathurst Resources has emerged as New Zealand’s largest specialist coalminer, operating two mines in the North Island (Maramarua and Rotowaro) and two mines in the South Island (Stockton and Takitimu), producing about two million tonnes of coal, and supplying both international and domestic markets. “About half of that goes to international steel manufacturers in South Korea, Japan and India, and about 500k tonnes goes to New Zealand’s only steel-making plant. “The remainder goes into process heat for dairy factories, meat and vegetable processors - that sort of domestic business.” By FYE25 (June) it is expected that Bathurst will generate revenue of around $420m with a total spend of around $330m, which includes labour, diesel, explosives, parts for heavy vehicles, contractors. “We employ about 650 people directly and another 150 contractors on top of that on a relatively full-time basis. “Our collective labour bill, including contractors, is around $100m, and of that about $40m is spent on the West Coast, $32m between the two North Island mines and the remainder is spread around Southland and offices in Christchurch and Wellington. “We are a large part of the GDP for the West Coast and the middle of the North Island.” Richard says that for FYE25, Bathurst expects to make about $60m in cash, which will stay in New Zealand. “We have $141m in the bank and zero debt. If you look at our forward plans, which include supporting a project in Canada and developing the Buller Project, we’re going to double the size of the company in the next three years. “We’re going to use some of that cash to do that and then we will be very profitable.” “It is in our best interests as good corporate citizens to maintain or improve on those high environmental standards.” Testament to its reputation as a can-do provider of heavy machinery and cranage services, Reefton Crane & Construction, has been supporting BT Mining’s activities at its Stockton Mine in the Buller Coal Field for many years. “Our projects have included the heavy haulage of fuel tanks, cranage to load and unload fuel tanks, tandem crane lifts of diggers on and off trucks, and cranage of decks off the dump trucks. It’s an historic relationship that we very much value,” says Paul, Reefton Crane and Construction’s Managing Director. Reefton Crane & Construction (2021) is a diverse company specialising in construction, cartage, cranage, piling, foundations and house removal projects. “Our ‘can-do’ approach and problem solving attitude to get the job done to a high standard often sees us working outside of these key areas on clients’ projects. We also have a well-equipped workshop enabling us to complete engineering and mechanical outwork. We complete projects South Island-wide.” Operating from their Gannons Road base in Reefton, Paul and Jody have assembled a diverse array of machinery and vehicles to tackle the diversity of projects for a diverse range of clients throughout the region, and supported by a multi-skilled team. Included in Reefton Crane and Construction’s line up of highly specialised machines are four mobile cranes for hire to suit the smallest to biggest project, complemented with a qualified and highly skilled operator. Paul makes the point that the range of machinery and the diversity of projects makes the West Coast based business so much more than just a crane company. “Our heavy haulage Kenworth truck is a very high-spec unit. With our hi-tech house removal trailer and several house jacks running off a mobile hydraulic power pack the relocation of buildings is very efficient. We also have transport and general-purpose trailers and can supply Class 1 and 2 pilots and pilot vehicles. Our Hi-Ab’s are great for smaller lifts, containers, and small building transportations. We have a wide range of excavators from 1.7 tonnes up to 30 tonnes and a couple of tip trucks.” We also have our crane mounted BSP piling hammer for piling 310mm I-beams and for general piling such as foundations, retaining walls, bridge abutments and numerous other applications. When Paul and Jody reflect on the 3-plus-years now in business on the Coast, they acknowledge that it’s been a hard road in today’s economic climate and that the diversity of projects they undertake helps, and makes us more than just a Crane company. ‘Can-do’ approach means no project to big or small Your dedicated experts on the West Coast, Canterbury and Marlborough for house removals, crane and hi-ab hire, cartage services and construction including piling and foundations.
