T T Russell Fredric Legacy project attracts strong interest Backing on to a protected rural landscape, Flagstaff includes new reserves, native planting and a network of walking and cycling trails. Flagstaff Dunedin REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Located on Wakari Road, Helensburgh, Flagstaff is being developed into Dunedin’s newest residential community. The project is deeply personal for its developers, the Kidston and Bretherton families, who have roots in the suburb going back five generations and know the attributes of the area very well. Flagstaff director, Marc Bretherton says the families are proud of this heritage. “Our family has lived in the area for over 130 years and our commitment is to create the best residential community in Dunedin that other families can enjoy for generations to come.” Flagstaff is less than 10 minutes from the Octagon and the university and has fantastic views over the city, from Mt Cargill to the north, toward the harbour and the peninsula and out to sea. Backing on to a protected rural landscape, Flagstaff includes new reserves, native planting and a network of walking and cycling trails. The hugely popular Redwood mountain bike park and the network of trails at Ross Creek are a short bike ride from the site, while Balmacewan Golf Course and Wakari Bowling Club are close. Growing up nearby, Marc is enthusiastic about the location and what is on offer. “Being this close to golf, mountain biking and Ross Creek reserve means that Flagstaff is ideal for active families who value the convenience of being 10 minutes from the city and who love making the most of their weekends in the outdoors and being close to nature.” Flagstaff is in-zone for Wakari Primary School and Balmacewan Intermediate; John MacGlashan College and Columba College and St Hilda’s are the three closest high schools, with a bus stop just a few minutes’ walk away. Marc is pleased with the level of interest to date and the sales that have been achieved. Section prices at Flagstaff start at $325,000 with only 21 sections now available. These range in size from smaller more affordable sites to large sites of over 1000sqm with reserve frontage. While boasting spectacular views over the city and to the north, the site itself has a gentle contour with largely flat sections, meaning a straightforward and cost-effective house build. A number of house-and-land packages are also available from the developer for those wanting the convenience of a well-designed, warm, comfortable new home. Resource consent for the first stage was granted in May and the developers have been “blown away” by the positive feedback and sales so far, Marc says. There has been a diverse group of purchasers to date, including young families and professional couples. Flagstaff has also been popular with people wanting to downsize from the family home, and build a smaller, warm, and sunny home on a flat, easy-care section. With a range of section sizes and affordable pricing “there is truly something to suit everyone,” he says. “We are seeing a real cross-section of people who have already chosen their sections and are excited about being part of the community. Flagstaff is a legacy project for our family and we are delighted to be able to share the area that we have all grown up in with a new group of residents. Works are anticipated to start this spring, with titles being issued in 2025.
