REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT An underpass stormwater culvert and an inspiring female traffic management worker clinched category wins for Isaac Construction Southern at this year’s Civil Construction NZ regional awards Otago. Making significant strides in civil engineering projects across the region since opening its Southern branch in 2021, Isaac Construction has now successfully completed several significant projects for the Dunedin City Council. These include the Retail Quarter ‘George Street’ redevelopment, the Wharf St intersection and safety upgrades, and the Malvern St sewer renewal, which won the prestigious IPEWA Water Project of the Year in 2022 and precipitated the establishment of Isaac’s Dunedin branch. In May this year, Isaac Construction won the Category B: Projects Up to $1 million Award for the Otago region at the Civil Contractors NZ (CCNZ) Awards 2024. This recognises the construction of an underpass near State Highway 1 Waihola, in collaboration with a local landowner, whose farm is dissected by the busy stretch of the national highway. The landowner sought out Isaac Construction based on its proven track record, and Isaac worked closely with Waka Kotahi NZTA and the Clutha District Council to gain necessary approvals and ensure the project’’s success. “The project required innovative traffic management solutions, which diverted traffic around the underpass excavation site,” says Isaac Construction Southern branch manager Kerry Hunter. T T to page 48 “Our team constructed a two-lane temporary bypass around the site, which didn’t disrupt traffic flow and kept the site safe.” The project included excavation, installation of a Hynds Pipe Systems Pinnacle Sealed Box Culvert Tank system, plus backfill of the box culvert from wingwall to wingwall and a 450mm-diameter civil boss pipe underground for future services. The Waihola Underpass project highlights Isaac Construction’s ability to collaborate effectively with various stakeholders and suppliers.
