AdvanceQuip REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Gore-based AdvanceQuip is a family-owned-and-operated business founded 20 years ago on the principles of trust, reliability and excellence, and has evolved as a leader in the hire of heavy construction equipment through the Southland and Central Otago regions. “We’re very focused on relationships and in this part of the world that comes with the territory,” says managing director, Ben McLean, whose father Steve established the business in 2004. The family framework of the business is bolstered by Ben’s brothers Rick and Jerry, who together with Steve and Ben play an active role in the management and direction of the business. Complementing AdvanceQuip’s hire business, is Earthworm Attachments, which specialises in importing and distributing hydraulic attachments throughout New Zealand, with branches also in Auckland and Christchurch. Rick and Jerry are directly involved in the leadership of Earthworm Attachments. AdvanceQuip was originally established as a sales dealership for Terex heavy earthmoving machinery with branches in Christchurch and Auckland. In 2014, the company transitioned as a distributor for Case construction equipment. “As that distributorship grew and developed across the country we complemented it with a hire business, renting out the Case equipment,” says Ben. “The hire business was initially a tool to help sell the machinery, and it grew organically alongside the dealership. We saw there was a lot of potential within the hire and attachments businesses, but didn’t have the resource to focus on it. So, 12 months ago, the family made a commercial decision to sell the Case construction equipment dealership, to enable growth and development of the hire business and Earthworm Attachments.” The development of a new, purpose-built head office just out of Gore in November last year coincided with AdvanceQuip’s transition to a hire business. The 2000sqm facility encompasses a large office area spread over two levels, and a large workshop with an engineering bay for the servicing and maintenance of the hire machinery. “The building provides us with more space to operate from, modern facilities for the team and equipment, and presents a very professional image to our clients. There’s also a covered washdown area at one end of the building, which was a step forward for the hire company, giving us quicker turnaround times from when an item is returned and available for hire again.” A fully stocked rental yard in Queenstown also enables AdvanceQuip to provide full coverage throughout the Southland and Central Otago regions. “From our Gore operation, the majority of our clients are from the agricultural sector, so we do a lot of rentals to farmers and contractors working on farms. “We’re also growing our footprint in the civil contracting sector, particularly in Invercargill. Our Queenstown operation is the complete reverse, with the civil and construction sectors our core client base.” AdvanceQuip offers about 100 different items of construction and earthmoving equipment for hire. The range includes excavators from small units on a trailer right up to 30 tonnes and everything in between. A wide range of attachments to go on the end of the excavators is also offered for hire. The fleet is also made up of wheel loaders, bulldozers, graders, on-road and off-road trucks, site dumpers, rubber track loaders, access equipment, rollers and compaction equipment. “We own late-model, well-maintained low-hour usage gear that is reliable, and the client can hire as needed - whether that’s for a day or more long term. We can deliver the machine to site, or they can pick it up. “Many of our clients don’t have a full-time use for the machines, and the biggest advantage in hiring the equipment is that the client doesn’t have to commit to the significant capital expense of purchasing. Many contractors will have an excavator, but can’t justify owning a more specialist machine, so we provide them with flexibility to take on a project, topping their own gear up with rental gear.” AJAX BUILDING CONTRACTORS LTD PO Box 388 Gore Mataura Highway GORE 9740 Phone: 03 208 9145 Tom: 027 215 1037 www.ajaxbuilding.co.nz Commercial, Industrial, Residential, Civil Engineering, Construction throughout Southland and Central, West and South Otago New Zealand Distributor for Ifor Williams Trailer – Europe’s leading trailer manufacturer.
