Design and Build Solutions Enabling businesses to reach their next stage of growth by delivering a full turn-key design and build solution that meets their clients’ needs well into the future is a key objective for XL Structural, as showcased by AdvanceQuip’s brand new Gore Headquarters. AdvanceQuip supplies rental equipment and machinery including loaders, bulldozers, excavators and attachments, with comprehensive maintenance and repair services to keep the equipment running smoothly. The company had outgrown its previous building and wanted a smart looking purpose-built solution for its various requirements, and turned to XL Structural for a solution. “We like to get involved in projects right from the start, identify all the site challenges and work with the client to understand the design features that are important to them, and then work with our design team to determine how we can achieve the client’s requirements,” says XL Structural Project Consultant Owen Brewerton. “Amongst the client’s key design requirements were a workshop with engineering and detailing bays, a truck service pit with a fully integrated luid delivery and return, a gantry running the length of the workshop, substantial o ice and showroom areas, an equipment washdown bay and, being Southland, a warm environment for the team to work.” XL Structural’s response was a full design for a 30m x 63m building, up to 7.775m at apex, along with the supply and installation of the steel superstructure for an architecturally pleasing building, positioned on a key site on State Highway 1, just out of Gore. The site was not on town water supply, so a solution for the collection of rainwater and recycling of the water used in the wash-down bays needed to be included in the design. Zoned under loor heating runs throughout the building including the workshop area, to meet the client’s requirement for sta comfort. The client also wanted to incorporate a contemporary o ice/warehouse space that re lected an industrial ambiance, which has been achieved utilising exposed structural steel in a large double height space, with a feature steel staircase leading from the ground loor to the upper level. “The steelwork supports CLT looring panels on the upper level, exposed from underneath. CLT has also been used as the stair treads.” Owen says that it is usual practice for XL Structural to partner with a local builder for the carpentry aspect of its projects. “The ability to leverage o local contractors minimises overhead such as project management and travel; savings which we can pass on to our client. One of the AdvanceQuip’s requirements was that we use as many local trades as possible in the project, and recommended Gore based Ajax Building. We successfully partnered with them to undertake construction of the concrete loor, the service pits, washdown bay, o ices/showroom and the internal itout.” With its headquarters in Timaru, which includes a steel fabrication facility, XL Structural also includes an o ice and installation team based in Gore. With a steel fabrication facility in the Waikato, the team provides nationwide coverage.
