72 | Anderson Fencing and Earthworks T T Russell Fredric Tender bid coup for Dunedin contractor The scope of the tender includes earthworks, retaining walls, concrete work, drainage and hard and soft landscaping, which includes paving, lawn and plantings “I personally worked through with the designers in designing the whole layout and structure and how everything’s going to go.” CONTRACTING Anderson Fencing and Earthworks has scooped a major coup, winning a competitive tender as the main contractor for Alexandra’s Riverside Park project. Many years in the planning, the staged project comprises a multi-purpose community development to rejuvenate the downtown area of lower Tarbert Street at the junction of the Clutha and Manuherekia rivers. The development will link the township to the riverside by establishing a family-friendly community and green space and precinct, which will include a terraced riverside area, boat- launching pontoon and local heritage elements, as well as being a destination for cyclists and walkers using the network of local trails. Anderson Fencing and Earthworks director Trent Anderson says the park will be a great asset for the town, and winning the tender for such a high-profile project against much bigger companies is very exciting. Based in Waitati, Dunedin, the company is owned by Trent and his wife Tonelle. It was established just five years ago as a rural fencing business and has successfully operated on the simple ethos of doing a good, honest job without compromise and providing fair value. As demand grew, Trent, a self-described perfectionist, added more equipment, services and staff and now has 14 employees and a fleet of equipment. Anderson Fencing and Earthworks has capability for fencing, gates, retaining, excavation, site preparation, piling, landscaping, yards, decks and gabion walls. A key strategy is having a range of equipment such as light and heavy excavators and trucks, and staff with flexibility of skills to do a variety of tasks, as well as being multi-skilled with the equipment to provide an efficient and seamless “can-do” service. This means a project can be planned and executed by Anderson Fencing and Earthworks from start to finish without having to rely on third parties, plus it provides better control over a site in terms of ensuring the highest standards of health and safety. “We’ve grown our business to the point that we provide a full design and build service, which includes handling consent documents and coordinating the traffic management.” This was part of the reason Anderson Fencing and Earthworks won the Alexandra Riverside Park project, Trent says. “I personally worked through with the designers in designing the whole layout and structure and how everything’s going to go.” The scope of the tender includes earthworks, retaining walls, concrete work, drainage and hard and soft landscaping, which includes paving, lawn and plantings. The construction of the pontoon is a specialised and challenging part of the project that requires a lot of consideration, including allowing for the highly variable levels of the Clutha River. Fortunately, Trent has previous experience in commercial fishing and is familiar with marine infrastructure, so he can bring this experience to the project. Trent expects the contract to take about four months to complete, consequently some staff will be based in Alexandra for this time to maximise efficiency. He is hopeful this project will represent a leap in gaining more civic projects and for the next stage in the company’s growth. “At the forefront for this is to deliver the project on time and on budget.” The same ethos applies to all of Anderson’s work, including other budget-sensitive projects, which has resulted in a consistent workload of school fencing for the Ministry of Education, involving different specifications for each school. “We’ve done fencing for probably eight schools now. They’re pretty big jobs, all primary schools.” “We make sure we do a really good, quality job, not rushing things and not taking shortcuts and it’s helped that we’ve got the machinery and the gear to do it, we are not leasing machinery.” PROUD TO SUPPORT ANDERSON FENCING & EARTHWORKS SMART TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS CONSTRUCTION FENCING FOR HIRE Phone: 0508 786 769 311 Kaikorai Valley Road, Dunedin www.stmsnz.co.nz office@stmsnz.co.nz Phone: 022 499 6235Aaron Gray (Operations) Short or long term Delivered & installed Enquire today
