TRANSPORT Heavy Diesel Support T T Hugh de Lacy Owners of Heavy Diesel Support Ltd, Sam and Paula Wilson, are on a mission to help industry keep the wheels of productivity turning. If it’s a diesel-powered machine and isn’t burning, then it isn’t earning and that’s a problem for them. HDSL are dealers for Volvo Penta industrial and marine products and Kalmar material handling equipment; however they still work on all brands and in all heavy off-road and marine industries. Sales and service representation for Waratah forestry and logging equipment, Humphree marine products, Pyrotek acoustic and thermal solutions and Parker-Racor filtration is also undertaken from the Birch Street Dunedin workshop, which is “large enough to hold some very big toys”. There are two fully equipped heavy field service mobile trucks that cater for simple straight forward servicing work through to component change outs, engine, transmission and driveline repairs, onsite engineering, hydraulic repairs and hose replacements, electrical and software diagnostics and many other general repairs. The field service staff travel all over the South Island and are frequently seen out and about around Otago and Southland. In the workshop, substantial projects are routinely undertaken including commissioning new plant and equipment, extensive modifications and installations to heavy equipment, custom engineering and fabrication tasks, and engine, driveline, hydraulic, electrical, midlife and ground up rebuilds. Recently the team completed an extensive project for Nature’s Wonders’ 15-metre-long tourist vessel‘ Albatross Express, which returned to service early in August. “The project entailed a full re-power, removing the existing aged Volvo Penta engines and replacing them with two new engines, synchronising these with two new Hamilton jet units,” Paula says. Immediately prior to this project was a 16 ton Kalmar forklift from Nelson requiring an engine exchange, along with a number of D16 engine rebuilds. “There are also some big toys needing attention that we receive from the mining industry. Our wall of fame is covered with photos of our technical team going at it, working on a wide variety of big toys,” Sam says. HDSL is also on a mission to grow the next generation of diesel technicians. “We like to think of ourselves as the University of Future Diesel Technicians, and we’re committed to adding new apprentices as often as opportunities allow,” Sam says. HDSL’s staff of seven includes two apprentices at the moment, and the company is motivated to provide them with the most comprehensive training available in the industry. “We’re very committed to increasing the attraction of heavy industry careers to young people, to replace those naturally leaving the industry,” Paula adds. • Stock up to 100mm • Drill up to 60mm Ph. 03 477 7277 www.precisionprofile.co.nz OTAGO’S PLATE-CUTTING SPECIALISTS LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED 14 Birch Street, Dunedin info@heavydieseldsupport.nz 0800 73 75 69 14 Birch Street, Dunedin info@heavydieseldsupport.nz 0800 73 75 69 WE HAVE A FULLY EQUIPPED WORKSHOP TO RECONDITION YOUR DIESEL OR PETROL ENGINE - FROM SMALL TO LARGE ENGINES.
