Studio2 Architects “I love art, I love sculpture and my introduction to architecture was through these things.” T T Karen Phelps ARCHITECTURE Although based in Auckland, Studio2 Architects, led by renowned architect Paul Clarke, works on projects New Zealand wide. For example, two recent and current South Island projects included a residential dwelling in Kaiteriteri, Tasman Region being built by Jason Gardiner Builders and alterations to an existing dwelling in Jack’s Point, Central Otago with building by Dent Construction. No matter what the project or where it is located, Studio2 Architects has made a name for itself by treating each project as a piece of inhabitable sculpture, blending art and architecture in innovative ways. This artistic approach has led to the creation of numerous award-winning designs that push the boundaries of traditional architecture. “I love art, I love sculpture and my introduction to architecture was through these things. They sit at the heart of every project we do,” says Paul. Founded in 2015, Studio2 Architects emerged from the well-established Crosson Clarke Carnachan Architects. Paul, who has been in practice for around 30 years, brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to each project. “We love what we do and we don’t have preconceived ideas. It’s about doing something special and unique for each client and for each site.” The firm’s portfolio is rich with examples of how sculpture and art influence its designs. A recent Studio2 project, Casa del Nord at Tara Iti, Mangawhai, exemplifies the firm’s commitment to creating designs that are both sculptural and deeply personal. The bespoke residential retreat, perched atop sand dunes overlooking a prestigious golf course, comprises three pods clad in natural cedar shiplap, harmoniously blending with the coastal landscape. The gently pitched metal roof and copper-clad amenity boxes add modern sophistication while maintaining aesthetic cohesion. True to Studio2’s philosophy, the design prioritises connection to the environment, with panoramic views of rolling dunes and the ocean visible from every corner of the home. The home has featured on television series New Zealand’s Best Home with Phil Spencer, as has Paul’s own home, simply titled #3, which also serves as a living manifesto of the firm’’s design philosophy. #3 is replete with artistic touches, from the concrete emblem at the entrance - a tribute to Paul’s family and a reference to the street address - to the coloured glass in the entry door that represents the primary colours, the starting point for any artist. “Upon entering, light delights from above through a sculptured skylight,” Paul says. “The transition into the main part of the home is created through a change in material from a concrete polished floor in the entry to Matai timber steps before coming back to concrete and, like an Escher 3D artwork, meeting another set of steps that take you in another direction.” This attention to detail and the interplay of materials, light, and space is characteristic of Studio2’s work. Each project is a carefully curated experience, designed to evoke emotion and enhance the inhabitants’ connection to their environment. Despite the firm’s artistic leanings, Paul emphasises that functionality is never sacrificed for form. “Our focus is to create spaces and designs that are not only bespoke and beautiful but, importantly, work for our clients and are designed around their lifestyle,” he says. This client-centred approach is at the heart of Studio2’s process. “We take a real interest in our clients. We want to know the way they live, what’s important to them, their hopes, dreams and desires. That way we and the client can both get a feel for what’s possible and we can then customise their project to have particular meaning to them and the way they live.” As Studio2 Architects continues to push the boundaries of architectural design, the practice remains committed to its core belief: that architecture, at its best, is a form of inhabitable art. “With each project we strive to create not just buildings, but sculptural spaces that resonate with clients and the surrounding landscape. In a world where cookie-cutter designs often dominate, Studio2 Architects hopes to serve as a reminder that living spaces can be more than just functional - they can be works of art that inspire and delight every day.” www.jasongardinerbuilders.co.nz | 027 2460870 | info@jasongardinerbuilders.co.nz Specialising in high quality architectural builds.
