| 99 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN Eco Workshop Specialising in high-end residential new builds, renovations, light commercial, and interior fit-outs, Eco Workshop primarily provides services throughout Otago, Southland, and Canterbury. neighbouring dwellings; a link, which doubles as a cosy reading nook, connects the main living area to the bedroom and bathroom spaces. “We’ve allowed for interior and exterior entertaining spaces that connect the living and master bedroom through a large deck that faces southeast, and overlooks Balclutha township. Part of the design was to balance the best outlook to the west with the need for sun within the dwelling. “We’ve successfully navigated the challenges of the site thanks to clever design and detailing solutions,” says Sarah. This includes strong gable forms at either side of the house and wing walls projecting outward. The home features a recessed entry with a bold front door, which complements its exterior cladding - a combination of macrocarpa timber and black metal. The three-bedroom home uses 140mm timber-framed external walls to allow for high insulation levels, and the interior features cathedral ceilings through the main living area and skylights across the north roof plane, which allow in natural light. The master bedroom includes a hidden walk-in wardrobe and a fully tiled dual-headed shower. A harmonious blend of modern design and natural elements, the Balclutha home offers a warm, inviting living space that is as functional as it is beautiful. Eco Workshop also has experience assisting with the renovation of re-locatable homes, which can offer a cost-effective housing solution. One such project was a 125sqm three-bedroom house built by Otago Polytechnic building apprentices and auctioned for charity. “The auction winner had a section in Mosgiel and came to us to ensure optimal placement within the restricted site constraints.” Eco Workshop’s success is built on strong local partnerships with builders who share their vision for high-quality construction. One such partner is SB2 Build Ltd, led by Sam Barnett, who has worked with Eco Workshop on 10 projects to date. “We really enjoy working with Sam. He’s a builder that trusts his architectural designer, and strives to get the best outcome for the clients,” says Bevan.
