Owned and operated by Kelvin and Cheryl Maguire, Maguire Engineering provides a valuable range of services to largely transport, rural and forestry customers in the wider Milton area. Kelvin and Cheryl purchased the business in 2012 when Kelvin heard it was for sale while working for another Milton engineering business. The previous owner had been running the workshop alone, and Kelvin also worked solo before bringing his oldest son, Sam, into the business in September 2013. Sam, now 31, works alongside his father, while Cheryl handles the office administration. Kelvin’s engineering background has been built through hands-on experience. After starting at a meat-processing plant, he spent six years building boats locally before moving to an engineering firm for four or five years. Today, Maguire Engineering combines general and light engineering, which includes steel gates for cattle yards, as well as hydraulic hose repairs, serving farmers, forestry operators, contractors and transport businesses in and around Milton, Lawrence and Waihola. Its location on the main road in Milton is particularly useful for transport operators, with trucks often calling in for small maintenance jobs while passing through. As a Hydraulink agent, hydraulic servicing and repairs are an important part of the business, particularly for forestry, farming and transport customers. The workshop can fit hydraulic rams to truck decks and undertake associated set-up work. For transport operators, the ability to deal with urgent repairs can be particularly valuable. Trucks travelling through Milton can arrive with an issue that needs attention before they can continue their journey. “We pretty much drop tools if someone needs something fixed. Not very often someone books in — we just do whatever comes in the door,” Kelvin says. That willingness to respond reflects the role a small engineering business can play in a rural service town. Milton serves a broad agricultural and forestry catchment, with local engineering capability, including general fabrication providing a practical service for machinery-dependent businesses. Maguire Engineering’s work is spread fairly evenly across its customer base, with transport accounting for a significant share. Kelvin says there are three engineering businesses in Milton, with enough work for each. The workshop has a range of welding and fabrication equipment, including aluminium MIG and TIG welders, a flux-core MIG, arc-air equipment, gas plant, drills and a press for jobs such as pushing out bushes and bearings. A new MIG welder has recently been added. Kelvin is a certified welder, holding AS/NZS ISO 9606.1:2017 certification covering specific For all your Trucking needs, call: 027 227 2324 or Proud to be associated with Maguire Engineering (Milton) Australian and New Zealand fabrication standards. He must re-sit the welding examination every three years to maintain currency, enabling him to undertake specialised truck and trailer welding work. Farming has been particularly positive for the business recently, with Kelvin saying the period since last Christmas has been good with customers spending on maintenance and improvements. The business remains family-based, with Kelvin, Sam and Cheryl working together with a view to the business continuing into the next generation. “We are very lucky to have the support of a great community and loyal customers and we wouldn’t be able to operate without them.”
