The name Harliwich has long been associated with earthmoving in Central Otago, and now the next generation has kicked off a business venture of their own. Cody Harliwich and his father Tony moved to Central Otago from Timaru 13 years ago — joining forces to start Earthworks Central 2021. Tony’s father first began Des Harliwich Bulldozing contractor in Balclutha back in the 1960s, while his three brothers started Harliwich Earthmoving in Roxburgh around the same time. But Tony moved to South Canterbury when he left home, and started out working in engineering, before branching out into earthmoving. Cody followed a similar path. Eventually they ended up back in the same place, Central Otago, with Tony and Cody now starting to build up the business with a fleet that includes two diggers, one skid steer as well as a truck transporter and trailer. The 14-tonne digger with fully 3D GPS is a great addition to the fleet and maps out the groundwork in subdivisions in next to no time. With designers now sending through the full outline of the house which is then loaded into the digger’s control system, the cut heights and exact shape of section is all ready on the screen before they even start. “We grew up with it, and I knew enough about it to know that I would love it.” “It takes away the guess work and all of the levels and heights are more accurate,” Cody says. “Everything has to be so precise because it’s all cost,” Tony added. Most of their work is currently in the Queenstown Lakes area, particularly Wanaka, and the pair are loving the challenge of in-depth house sites that aren’t just the standard “cookie cutter” type building footprints. “Civil residential is a large part of our work,” Cody says. There have been a lot of dig outs for basements and games rooms, which requires moving a large amount of material. They also have experience in landscaping and pool areas. The father and son duo complement each other with their wide range of skills. With Tony’s engineering background they can carry out most of the fleet maintenance themselves to save costs, whilst Cody is enjoying learning all about AI and fast tracking this across administration tasks. They’re looking forward to getting stuck into some bigger jobs over summer, including a house demolition, rebuild and swimming pool in Wanaka that will keep them busy over the coming months. Cody and Tony pride themselves on always leaving a site better then when they arrived and are constantly aware that “you are only as good as your last job”. There’s been some interesting jobs over the past four years: water races at Cardrona Station, subdivision work at Parkins Bay, cutting farm tracks, and even school projects at Omakau Primary. Cody and Tony have great pride in their family name and know there are huge expectations associated with that as well. “We grew up with it, and I knew enough about it to know that I would love it,” Tony says.
