Isaac Construction’s ongoing success at the Civil Contractors New Zealand (CCNZ) Nelson Marlborough Excavator Operator Competition highlights the capability of its people and the company’s continued investment in developing skilled operators across its regional teams, says Isaac Construction Nelson branch manager, Toby O’Sullivan. The competition, which brings together some of the region’s best excavator operators to test their precision, technical ability and problem-solving skills, has become a valuable opportunity for Isaac Construction staff to challenge themselves outside their everyday roles. Toby says the company is proud of the way its operators have embraced the event and represented the business. In 2023, Isaac Construction foreman Tui Paikea placed third in the regional competition and at the 2025 event, Nelson branch manager, Toby O’Sullivan, achieved a placing in the ‘fun’ category. Toby says the results reflect the quality of people working within the business and the opportunities available for staff to continue developing their careers. “It shows our team is highly skilled and good operators,” says Toby. “We run an extensive training and development programme at Isaac Construction. Everyone gets a personal development plan and training is provided for them. “Staff really enjoy the opportunity to get out and compete. It is something they voluntarily choose to enter and it is great to see them putting their skills to the test. Our company motto is to support whatever anybody wants to do.” Toby says Isaac Construction has a close relationship with CCNZ, supporting the organisation and its focus on strengthening the civil construction sector. “We support CCNZ wherever we can because it is an organisation we are closely aligned with,” says Toby. “A lot of our staff hold roles at regional and national level, including Isaac Construction project engineer, Jack Whittle, who is a committee member for the Nelson and Marlborough region.” he company also values the community focus behind many CCNZ initiatives, with events often supporting charitable causes. “A lot of events are for charity, which aligns really well with Isaac Construction’s values,” Toby says. ince 1950, Isaac Construction has played a role in building and maintaining infrastructure across the South Island, delivering projects ranging from smaller private developments through to nationally significant infrastructure. Isaac Construction’s Nelson branch was established in 2022 and the company has since developed a strong presence in the region. It also has branches in Blenheim, Christchurch, Dunedin and the West Coast. Its teams provide a wide range of civil construction services, including earthworks, drainage, surfacing, asphalt, quarrying and heavy civils. “Not many companies offer the scope of services we do,” says Toby. “From a residential driveway to an airport runway, we have a long and proud history of providing quality construction products and services for a wide range of projects of all sizes and complexities. “Whether clients need us for one aspect of a project or many, we have the latest plant and equipment and proven technical expertise to deliver a suite of civil construction services.” A current significant project is the Bridge Street to Better in Nelson, the largest capital infrastructure project the company has delivered in the area.
