The 200sqm home at Northlake – called a “heart warmer” by judges – won the Southern Region Supreme House of the Year under $1 million at the 2026 Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards. It also won a Regional Gold Award and was named the Regional Category winner for the Builder’s Own Home Category. The brief from owner Jack Gibson was to create an easy-care living and low-maintenance home that still stands out from the others. Bagged brick – a low-maintenance cladding – was used for one of the main walls and some feature walls, and hasn’t been used in Wanaka before. “Then we’ve done vertical Colorsteel and broken it up with timber cladding in certain areas, which we think worked really well together,” Jack says. Inside the home are three bedrooms, with an office that can double as a fourth bedroom. There are two ensuites, allowing one room to potentially be rented out, and a main bathroom. A log burner heats the home, with a central zone control heating and cool system installed throughout the house. Standout features include the kitchen and breakfast bar with high-spec finishes, such as porcelain and stone bench tops. The full joinery window seat wraps right round from floor to ceiling and matches the kitchen. Another standout feature of the house is a hidden fixed-glass sliding door that leads into the office. All three bathrooms are fully tiled and feature textured tiles on certain walls. Jack says a challenging aspect of the build was a hidden internal gutter on the flat roof. “Otherwise, (it was a) pretty smoothly run build. No real complications or issues along the way.” T T to page 88 Architecture 021 911 425 info@idsgn.nz www.idsgn.nz Jack says he was looking to build a bespoke build that could be used as a show home and bringing clients and friends to. “(That’s why) we’ve gone that little bit extra mile with it than what we probably originally planned when we decided to build on that section.” He says winning the supreme award was a great achievement. “Not only for myself and the company, but everyone involved – all the subtrades, the employees, suppliers, and contractors. Everyone kind of benefits from it, and it just kind of sets a standard for us moving forward with current and upcoming projects to aim for that level and standard so we can hopefully stand out from other companies in the area.” The firm also won a Regional Gold Award for Lott House at Hawea.
