104 | LIFESTYLE The Sterling Retirement in Kaiapoi going strong The villas offer spacious open-plan living, dining and kitchen areas. from page 103 “We as operators provide the facilities and services but in order for residents to be able to live their best lives this means they live independently and drive all the utilisation of those facilities through their committees, social groups etc. “We’re enabling but extremely respectful of residents’ rights to live the life they choose and that life comes in all different forms. For example we will never take responsibility for telling someone else how to live their life and that includes respecting an individual who chooses not to participate.” Alan says that The Sterling is a village within the Silverstream community rather than something separate. In a practical sense that means it blends in seamlessly so that when people drive around Silverstream it is not obvious where The Sterling starts and ends. The Sterling also encourages interaction with the wider community. For example some of the ground floor amenities, such as the café, will be open to the public. Once completed The Sterling will offer 78 villas, 267 apartments, 48 care suites and a 36 purpose built care suite, single level memory care building for people with dementia and cognitive impairment. “The memory care building will comprise of three stand alone homes with 12 beds in each. Each will form a small community for people to live their lives to the best way possible within that environment. “It’s a very respectful way of delivering care, very niche and takes a real person-centred approach,” explains Alan who has spent 23 years working in leadership roles in the retirement and aged care industries. The care at The Sterling will be designed in collaboration with leading dementia researchers at the University of Stirling in Scotland to ensure the model of care is based on international best practice. To date 18 villas have been constructed in The Sterling and are now all occupied. Stage 2 consists of 16 villas. They are currently under construction, and all are sold. The first of these will be occupied in February and the last of them by March next year. Alan says the approx 120sqm two-bedroom, two bathroom villas offer spacious open-plan living, dining and kitchen area leading out to a beautiful outdoor living area. Additional services can be added at residents’ request for example someone to do the housekeeping. The Kauri building is in the detailed design stage and will offer 40 apartments, café, bar, cinema, activities area and library. Alan expects the apartments to be released to market before Christmas this year. “The views from the top of this building are amazing including the Southern Alps. It’s probably going to be the tallest building in North Canterbury.” There is also a temporary clubhouse at The Sterling, which Alan says residents are very much enjoying. Eventually The Sterling will also offer a number of communal areas for people to enjoy including a pool, beauty salon, consulting rooms, gym, bowling green, croquet courts, putting green, community raised gardens and a potting shed. People interested in retirement living at The Sterling can visit the showhome villa at 6 Camelia Lane, open daily from 11am til 3pm (by appointment only), or call the sales office on 0508 783 754.
