Under the ownership of Bruce and Lisa Keenan since 2016, the Christchurch-based business has extended its reach to connect Kiwis across the land with the freshest, tastiest seafood varieties, sourced from sustainably managed environments. When the couple first bought the business, Oceans North Seafood was operating primarily as a wholesale supplier to fine dining and catering establishments. Bruce and Lisa felt that Kiwis with a taste for premium seafood should also have the opportunity to sample their quality range. “Lisa is a teacher by training and loves dealing with the public,” says Bruce. “Being a mother and a foodie, she was really keen to open up our range to the home market. Covid gave us the impetus to develop an online shop on our website. We started to deliver direct to customers – it has been a whole new business. The response from Kiwi consumers has been great. We have some fantastic customers now who order directly from our website weekly and love what we do.” People can also shop for fresh seafood at the company’s Sockburn premises. As well, Oceans North Seafood continues to operate as a specialist supplier of seafood - including hard to source delicacies such as muttonbird, smoked eel, crayfish and paua - to the restaurant trade. Quality assurance for Oceans North Seafood encompasses not just freshness and taste but also environmental considerations and sustainability. Bruce and Lisa have strict standards with their suppliers around where and how fish is caught, and how it is processed. It’s all about wanting to do their part to protect precious marine habitats, as well as safeguarding the future of quality fishing. “Everybody wants to know where their food comes from. We do a lot of research when selecting our preferential suppliers. It’s why we only buy Mt Cook Alpine Salmon, for example, because low stocking densities give salmon maximum freedom to swim keeping them agile, lean and content. “We buy Paradise Prawns from the pristine waters of New Caledonia, where they get natural feed and no antibiotics, meaning they have the natural taste and flavour of wild prawns.” Another preferential supplier on their team is the Chatham Island Food Co, named Supreme Champion at the 2022 Outstanding NZ Food Producer Awards. Products supplied by Oceans North include Chatham Blue cod fillets and artisan paua pies. Photos: Glen van der Busse Bruce and Lisa Keenan - a passion for seafood.
