T to page 16 With international borders open again, a brand-new waterfront hotel is launching in Kaikōura at just the right time to provide a welcome boost to the tourist town. The new Sudima Kaikōura hotel will formally open to guests from the end of October. Located on the shoreline with stunning sea and alpine views, this 120-room, 4.5 star hotel is poised to set a new benchmark for visitors to the region. Construction of the $35 million hotel was slowed due to disruptions arising from Covid-19 but has been full steam ahead this year. Excitement is fast building in the town ahead of the October opening. Having a hotel of this size and quality is a first for Kaikōura and a real positive for the town as it continues to recover from the 2016 earthquake and the impacts of Covid-19. Kaikōura is once again growing as a tourist destination. Superbly situated, Sudima Kaikōura is set to become a sought-after base for visitors to the area. “Our forward bookings are tracking really well,” says Maree Welgus, Regional General Manager of Sudima’s South Island hotels. “We’re holding strong bookings, particularly from October to next March. They’re coming from the domestic market, as well as Australia and North America. People are doing their research and booking with us as we’re the only hotel of this type in Kaikōura.” As a long-time supplier of ethically sourced, great tasting co ee to Sudima Hotels, Co ex Co ee New Zealand is once again proud to be working with the group in the lead up to the opening of their latest new hotel in Kaikōura. Co ex has been consulting with Sudima Kaikōura’s set up team and hotel manager to ensure they have everything needed for guests. We will be supplying this to Sudima Kaikōura, along with Pukka tea that comes in compostable packaging. [Pukka is another brand built upon organic farming, Fairtrade Fairtrade coffee for new Sudima Kaikōura and conservation]. All the takeaway co ee cups and lids that we supply are also compostable and biodegradable.” Co ex is regularly audited to ensure its Fairtrade and organic co ee meets certi ication standards. “We have to account for every bean in the blend.” Co ex Co ee Roasters has its roots in European co ee culture. It was founded by two Italian partners in Melbourne in the late 1950s. By the mid-1990s, and under new owners, the company was growing fast and moved to a new site in Brunswick. With the move came the creation of a state-of-the-art roasting facility. In turn, this propelled further expansion into new markets. Co ex New Zealand has now been providing quality co ee and service for nearly 20 years.
