52 | CONTRACTING BG Contracting Ltd - 40th Anniversary Fresh take on creating new communities T T Kelly Deeks Civil engineering contracting company BG Contracting approaches the creation of new communities like an art form, combining quality, innovation, and a good work ethic and delivering completed projects as quickly as possible. Responsible for installing the drainage in most of the northern part of Rangiora and now celebrating 40 years in business, BG Contracting has grown to become a top performer in the subdivision space. “I’ve always found it staggering how quickly BGs can get things done, we don’t muck around,” says BG Contracting managing director Stephan Rattray. “ “Subdivisions are an art form of coordination. It takes a fair bit of flexibility and team work to actually deliver subdivisions in a timely fashion.” Time is money. If we can make something happen quicker we will, and that has served us well since the beginning.” BG Contracting was established by Brian (Blue) Inwood and Gavin Hayton in Rangiora in 1982, a couple of hard-working mates with little more than a pair of gumboots each, a wheelbarrow, and a ute. They laid a foundation for high quality drainage work and an easy-going attitude to deal with, and continued on a small scale, establishing their credentials across a range of civil construction services. The idea that anyone can build up their knowledge and work their way up the ranks continues to drive BG Contracting today, with heavy investment in upskilling and good opportunities for advancement for the team of now more than 60 employees. “We are all into leadership development,” Stephan says. “Whatever level you work at at BGs, there is an expectation you are going to be a leader. We do that by leading from behind. It’s all about supporting the guys who are getting the job done. We are doing everything we can to remove the potholes and the handbrakes so they can carry on and they don’t have to slow down for anything.” BGs encourages its people to use their initiative and find new ways of doing things, and they are rewarded for innovation. “If someone comes up with an idea or a piece of plant that we could get that will make things happen quicker, we will go and have a look at it.” T T to page 54 Contact JohnnyMiller 027 446 1318 | ncrutbusters@yahoo.co.nz | 122 Ginders Road, Hawarden 7385 North Canterbury Rutbusters Hands on: Brian (Blue) Inwood, left, one of the founders of BG Contracting and managaing director Stephan Rattray.
