56 | T T Russell Fredric CONTRACTING Tim Yeo Contracting As one of Invercargill’s leading roofing businesses, Tim Yeo Contracting has a long established reputation for service and quality without compromise. This ethos reflects the passion of owners Tim and Sandra Yeo who are still hands-on even after 24 years of owning and running the business which covers Invercargill, Southland and Fiordland. “We do all the quoting and measure-up ourselves, we don’t have anyone else doing it. Tim and I do all of ours and I do all the quoting,” Sandra says. This approach enables Tim and Sandra, as the business owners, to meet someone onsite in person and vice versa. Tim still works as one of the roofing crew while Sandra can just as easily be up on a roof taking measurements or installing flashings, as well as taking care of administration and quoting. “We are not just a voice over the phone. We enjoy that face-to face contact.” Judging not only by the workload, but also the number of word-of-mouth referrals and jobs they gain that did not involve a second quote, Sandra believes their personal involvement right from the start is a winning combination. Tim’s genuine interest in roofing is most likely inherited; his father and three brothers have all either had or still have roofing businesses, consequently Tim was helping his father from a relatively young age. Tim Yeo Contracting’s services include new roofing, repairs, reroofing, continuous spouting and fascia for the full range of work from residential to large scale commercial jobs with significant long-term clients. Among these are Alliance, South Port and building materials manufacturer Niagara for which Tim Yeo Contracting installed roofing for five large industrial buildings which cover about 10,000 square metres each. Sandra agrees it was a compliment to win a contract from a company that is a major player in the construction industry. “The fact that we have a very good working relationship with Niagara, it’s something we were very fortunate to be able to do.” Tim Yeo Contracting employs eight staff, who, like others in the construction industry, are managing a huge workload. While the covid pandemic has created its challenges, Tim and Sandra planned ahead to ensure the best possible continuity in upcoming jobs. “We knew material, especially with the likes of roofing iron, was going to get scarce before Christmas so we got proactive and bought quite a few roofs for clients so we were never hindered when it came to that, but you also have to have the collateral to be able to do that sort of thing and that comes with being established. “We’ve never been hindered per se when it comes to covid.” By choice and because relationships are important to them, Tim and Sandra work with a limited number of builders and Tim has considerable expertise to provide input into roof designs, especially complex designs that might to might not work in practice. Sound advice is also available as to whether an existing roof can be repaired or needs to be replaced. Sandra advises that when comparing quotes people should make sure the information is “apples for apples”. One difference in quoting can be in edge protection scaffolding. Tim Yeo Contracting have invested in their own edge protection which creates efficiencies as well as being able to include this in quotes at a very competitive rate.
