At the 2022 New Zealand Commercial Project Awards in May, the BG Cooke Construction team was honoured with a Bronze Award in the industrial category for completing a massive warehouse at Christchurch’s Waterloo Business Park. Receiving the award at the event’s 10th anniversary gala made the accomplishment all the more memorable. It was also the first time the awards had been held in Christchurch at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre. Project teams from across the country came together to celebrate the best in commercial construction. The New Zealand Commercial Project Awards are proudly owned by the Registered Master Builders Association. BG Cooke Construction led the bronze award-winning warehouse project, which was completed in conjunction with project partners San Architecture (Architect/Designer) and Tetrad Consulting (Engineer). The 3000sqm warehouse, complemented with spacious offices and boardroom, has been built to serve as the global headquarters and distribution centre for Jamie Kay, a NZ based brand known for ethically produced baby and children’s clothing. Brad Cooke, Founder and Managing Director of BG Cooke Construction, says delivering this project was “an absolute pleasure” for himself and his team. Brad and wife Grace, who lead BG Cooke Construction, have together created a productive and skilled team who share core values and a commitment to delivering impeccable results. They provide expertise in rural, commercial and residential building. “We’re pretty proud of this one,” says Brad. “Thanks so much to our whole crew and subcontractors who worked with pace and precision to bring this project to life – and a huge thank you to Jamie Kay for giving BG Cooke Construction the opportunity to be part of this journey with you.” It is not just the impressive scale that makes this project stand out. It is also its industrial chic style and strong form of precast concrete tilt panels and engineered structural steel. Feature lighting inside softens the powerful structure while simultaneously highlighting the precision finish. Clad in charred larch, the generous office space is contemporary and stylish with floor to ceiling windows. The dark wood theme is echoed in cabinets and storage, elegantly uniting exterior and interior. A steel canopy extending out from the building is a functional element that adds to the architectural style statement. BG Cooke Construction have delivered a standard here that ensures the building’s end users will enjoy working here. The attention to detail extends into bathroom facilities and staffroom, where a handcrafted concrete benchtop is a notable inclusion. Timber features throughout the staff areas are also mirrored in the custom woodgrain finish at entry. Another striking touch is the recessed illuminated brass signage that gives this building a real sense of destination. For Brad and Grace, building their construction company together has been incredibly rewarding. Brad is a highly skilled and knowledgeable builder and concreter with over 15 years’ building experience, predominantly in commercial construction. Grace is currently managing social media and marketing and has also been heavily involved in recent years as business development and office manager. Following an accident that hospitalised Brad for a few months last year, the couple expanded their team to help run the company’s busy programme. “Brad has an amazing EA Krystal; we have our awesome construction site manager Matt Kiesanowski; Matt Mcdonald, site and concrete foreman; Andrew Proctor and Matt Burleigh as our site foremen; our quantity surveyor Hannah Buchanan; our accounts clerk Kirsty; and our amazing team of lads that keep the wheels running,” says Grace. With a capable concrete and precast fabrication division, the company is continuing to grow with plenty of work on the horizon. “We have more than 20 staff now, including our placers and steel tiers.” BG Cooke Construction builds to a high standard and within desired time frames. New enquiries always welcome. “We’re pretty proud of this one,” says Brad. “Thanks so much to our whole crew and subcontractors who worked with pace and precision to bring this project to life ...”
