Homes Created’s redevelopment project in The Wood, The Terraces, was a resounding success when it came to market in August 2020. Company owners Alistair Middleton and Barb Lawson, along with Justin Fletcher of Red Box Architects, had purchased the 135-yearold building and its 800sqm site and decided to restore it back to the grand colonial building it once was. Aiming to create a community hub, they restored and refitted the building for cafe Bobby Franks to occupy the lower storey, while turning the upper level into a three bedroom apartment. A Special Housing Accord (SHA) was placed on the adjacent land, allowing Homes Created to also build four architecturally designed colonial-style townhouses in keeping with the heritage look of the building, thus creating a little village within an established suburb. Homes Created is now working on another block of land in The Wood, where the company has purchased one of the last remaining greenhouses from the market garden days as well as an old villa. Just like before, Alistair and Barb have restored the villa and are now building three architecturally designed townhouses behind it. Homes Created was established about 10 years ago when Alistair and Barb moved away from their previous partnership that built very large, multi-million dollar architectural homes, to chase their dream of building smaller, more affordable architecturally designed homes for families. “We wanted then, and we still do today, to keep costs down as much as possible while still building beautiful, architecturally designed homes,” Barb says. “We try to get land in established areas, so there is more of a community feel with established homes and local shops and amenities.” With three teams of builders, Homes Created splits its time between clients builds and its own developments, ensuring private clients’ projects get the attention they deserve. Alistair is a builder of many years experience who has also spent time in industry governance as a director on the national board of the Registered Master Builders Association. His passion still lies in creating beautiful homes. Barb complements Alistair’s set of special skills with her degrees in business and visual arts, and she handles the administration of Homes Created as well as the interior design work for spec homes and client builds when requested. Relationships are key to Homes Created and are one thing Alistair in particular has been very good at establishing and maintaining. Whether with clients, architects, subtrades, suppliers, or staff, Homes Created values all the support, appreciation, and advocacy it gratefully receives from those it works with. Homes Created will up the ante on its next development project with Red Box Architects, where it is set to build up to 10 new affordable architecturally designed homes on a large piece of land in the Nelson suburb of Stoke.
