Once selected, Scott Construction Marlborough rolled its sleeves up with the design team to work collaboratively with the client and ensure the design remained within the project budget. For BRI, Scott Construction Marlborough has built a new research winery in Blenheim, completed in February 2020. It is not only a state-of-the-art facility for the advancement of wine science and viticultural practice in New Zealand, but it’s also the first 5 Green Star certified winery new build in the country and the first 5 Green Star rated new build in Marlborough. “It was bleeding edge in the sense that it was a new experience for our local industry, so another layer of complexity had to be worked through and systems established with our subcontractors and suppliers,” John says. “There were a lot of learnings along the way, and the project had an incredibly tight construction timeframe. It was a major achievement for all involved.” For Cloudy Bay Vineyards, Scott Construction Marlborough has transformed the winery’s original cellar building from an underutilised mixed-use space into an exciting new visitor experience. Scott Construction Marlborough brought with it the experience gained from the BRI project around the processes and protocols which had to be followed to comply with the 5 Green Star rating, and where possible, partnered with the same subcontractors and suppliers. The Cloudy Bay project was designed to a more recent version of the 5 Green Star specification, so there were further learnings and new design parameters to understand and deliver on. The effects of Covid on overseas suppliers, combined with Auckland being under greater restrictions than the rest of the country had a flow on effect with this project, and became the norm for many projects across the country at the time. “Design changes that would previously have been accommodated with minimal impact on the programme but became another project in themselves.” The project was a large-scale multimillion dollar alteration which was more complex than many new builds delivered by Scott Construction Marlborough. During demolition, new challenges presented themselves as more of the existing building was revealed. There was a lot of problem solving and thinking outside the square required by the Project Control Group, and the result was a great example of the benefits of embracing a collaborative approach to sustainable building. With two 5 Green Star rated projects now under its belt, Scott Construction Marlborough is strong supporter of the New Zealand Green Building Council movement and would like to
