The Arrowtown-based contracting firm is involved in a number of large-scale projects underway in the booming region. One such project is the Hanleys Farm development, which is currently the largest residential development in the Wakatipu-Queenstown Lakes District. Located beside the established Jacks Point development, Hanleys Farm has delivered close to 1000 residential lots to the market in the last five years. Base Contracting was heavily involved in all stages of the site earthworks, reticulated services, roading and civil finishes. General manager Julian Kinnaird said extra plant and machinery had been required for the project. “We’ve added quite a bit in the last couple of years.” They had also hired machinery such as bulldozers and dump trucks from local companies. “We’ve been bringing in a lot of additional plant to meet the additional requirements.” Drainage capacity had to be increased to include more certified drainlayers on the team, and water reticulation capacity was also grown. The development was not yet completed, with one more stage to do, which Julian hoped Base would be working on next year. A challenge for the company was managing traffic congestion at Frankton that staff and trucks had to travel through to get to the site, and timings had to be adjusted. A multi-faceted contracting firm, Base undertakes large earthworks, offers drainage and utility services, trenching, excavations, installation of reticulated services, subdivisional developments, retaining structures, rock walls, rural property development, ponds and water features, roading, demolition and high alpine re-vegetation projects. The impressive range of plant includes 15 excavators ranging from 1.8 Tonne to 35 Tonne machines. Many of the excavators are fitted with GPS to enable finishing, cut and fill excavation, and they have many attachments to make the machines multipurpose. These include rock breakers, compacting heads, trenching buckets, mulching heads and augers. T T to page 32
