The answer lies in Bascik’s burgeoning transport division, which has emerged as the largest user of KiwiRail for transporting goods from Auckland to the South Island. This distribution hub serves as the focal point for the goods that enter Bascik’s South Island hubs, where they are unloaded and distributed. Owain says the impact of the new transport hub extends beyond infrastructure. And highlights the significance of the expansion. “It’s been a game-changer. We were always congested before, so now it’s going to really increase efficiencies and provide a better end result for customers. We have also added five new staff members on the freight handler side, a clear testament to the growth potential this project unlocks.” Bascik Transport: Leading the Way in Efficient Logistics and Sustainable Practices Over its five decades of operation Bascik Transport has become a name synonymous with efficiency, reliability and sustainability, solidifying its position as a trailblazer in the logistics and transportation industry. This family-owned business has evolved from its humble beginnings to become a powerhouse in freight and distribution, setting industry standards through its exceptional services and commitment to sustainable practices, says company general manager Owain Davies. Founded by Mervin Bascik in 1970, the company initially commenced operations with a single truck, catering to Christchurch’s metropolitan deliveries. Since then, Bascik Transport has expanded its reach, establishing its presence in key locations across New Zealand’s South Island. Under the leadership of Mervin’s son, Tony Bascik, the present managing director, the company’s fleet has grown exponentially, now boasting over 150 trucks nationwide and a total staff of 280. Owain says that what sets Bascik Transport apart is its comprehensive approach to the logistics landscape. The company operates three third-party logistics (3PL) warehouses in Christchurch equipped with modern pallet racking systems. These warehouses, managed by a team of proficient staff and managers, cater to customer storage needs while ensuring efficient order fulfilment through meticulous picking and packing processes. Additionally, the company’s large depot in Auckland acts as another central hub, orchestrating the collection of freight from various locations. It’s dedication to professionalism and superior service means it has become the go-to company for many industries: “For example we specialise in food-grade products and our warehouses have full rodent control and computer-controlled stock rotation using our customised software,” explains Owain. “Our managed warehousing system is audited independently as part of our Food Safety Programme, ensuring the utmost care in handling products.” Bascik Transport’s distinctive approach revolves around utilizing its own fleet of trucks, purpose-built for various types of freight. This allows it to offer specialist services including car and container transportation.
