Fulton Hogan has been operating in Nelson Tasman region since 1989 and brings a forward-looking, progressive approach to every civil construction project. With a Nelson office and depots in Murchison and T?kaka, Fulton Hogan Nelson is a one-stop shop civil construction provider for the region. “Nelson has a relatively buoyant and diverse economy, which has helped us to grow here,” says regional manager Gavin Stoble, whose career with Fulton Hogan spans 25 years. “From Nelson, we provide a full range of civil construction services, including asphalt, quarries, road construction, surfacing, water treatment plant, laboratories, road maintenance, transport, and traffic management.” As a key local employer, with some 250 staff on the team, Gavin says Fulton Hogan Nelson offers an exciting and positive workplace culture with plenty of scope for progression. “Our staff have multiple opportunities to learn and grow across many different aspects of the business. We provide training so people can step across from say road building to surfacing or asphalt, or working in the laboratory.” In working with their clients, Fulton Hogan aims to develop solutions in a collaborative way that pools innovation, resources and ideas to provide the best outcomes. Among their key clients are Waka Kotahi, Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council, Port Nelson, Nelson Airport and private developers, such as the Gibbons family. “We like to get alongside the client to help them solve problems – it’s a very satisfying way of working. In Nelson, the contracting fraternity is really quite closely connected too and we often work together to complete projects.” When SH6 needed substantial repairs following storm damage last year, Fulton Hogan Nelson swung into action for Waka Kotahi along with six other Fulton Hogan regions, subcontractors and WSP to reinstate five sections of the highway between Rai Valley and Hira. All the work - including two significant additional elements - was completed on time in 48 days and open for the Christmas holiday season. “It’s a great example of how we work. It’s a partnership approach. “ If you have any problems, you can say ‘let’s get our heads together and figure out the best way forward’.” The SH6 reinstatement project recently won a 2023 National Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) Excellence in Asset Management Award – and it wasn’t the only award winning project for Fulton Hogan Nelson on the night. Their other 2023 IPWEA Excellence in Asset Management Award was for the environmental planning and management of the Challies Quarry and Wetland. Working with Tasman District Council, Fulton Hogan Nelson has developed a way of extracting and transporting gravel for concrete from alongside the Waimea River to their Appleby plant via a temporary bridge across the river without adversely affecting the river. From next year, the 27ha gravel extraction site will be progressively turned into a wetland that will become part of the Waimea River Park. “We will be returning the area to wetlands with walkways and making it a real community amenity. We’re working with the local community and iwi to plan out this project – it’s another great partnership.” This latest quarry to wetland project follows an earlier smaller scale trial of the concept alongside the Motueka River, where Fulton Hogan has transformed a two hectare LINZ gravel extraction site into a wetland. “In Nelson Tasman, 95% of the historical wetlands have disappeared. This is a small step to try and return some areas back to nature. For the trial project, we sourced rare plants that were once abundant here and are hoping that as they mature we will be able to take cuttings of those back to the Challies site to further improve biodiversity.” Another exciting new project with community connections for Fulton Hogan Nelson is Motueka Transport Choices where, in conjunction with the Tasman District Council, the team is creating new and improved cycleways and safer intersections. “Our staff have multiple opportunities to learn and grow across many different aspects of the business.”
