REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT South Canterbury: Aorangi Veterinary Services With clinics in Timaru, Geraldine, and Fairlie, Aorangi Veterinary Services (AVS) has brought a focus on preventative animal health measures to mid and south Canterbury and the Mackenzie Districts, improving the lives of people and large and small animals for the past 45 years. AVS veterinarian Neroli Wall says the practice works together with its clients to develop sound animal health plans, assist with staff training, give good nutritional advice, and preventative medicine options to help them meet current and future market demands. “We understand that no two farms are the same, and every farmer has different goals, so we don’t come in with any preconceived ideas of what our clients want to achieve,” she says. “Some farmers want to be set up to enjoy more time away from their business, some want to be able to train and upskill their staff, and some might be trying to push the limits and get better and better. So we listen, and understand what drives them, and help them towards achieving their goals.” AVS designates an experienced vet to oversee individual farming operations and implement and review a comprehensive animal health plans programme. “This means one vet knows your operation inside out,” Neroli says. “During lambing, calving, and fawning, or when animals are sick, we send out your dedicated vet.” AVS’s veterinary services for sheep, beef, and deer systems have long been aimed at sustainable, progressive production and with ever-evolving science, AVS advises preventative animal health measures to optimise efficiency and value. “Animal health and productivity go handin-hand. They are both huge drivers of farm profitability and efficiency, which is in turn a driver of sustainability and a farm’s environmental impact. “We are really focused on ways we can improve on-farm efficiencies, particularly around reducing animal deaths and animal losses. We help our clients to reduce these losses and increase an animal’s lifetime in the herd, thus improving efficiencies on farm. “The more efficient, the more sustainable, and we think we can help our clients to achieve their environmental goals.” AVS provides a targeted medicine approach for both large and companion animals. “Worldwide concerns around parasite and antimicrobial resistance are pressing, and mean we may no longer be able to readily rely on drenches and other treatments to treat parasites and diseases. So preventative medicine, nutrition, and working beside farmers to come up with practical strategies to deal with any identified bottle necks, are all critical to helping our clients to succeed into the future.” Animal health technology is moving rapidly and information technology in the form of wearable devices like cow collars and pedometers have had both prompt uptake by farmers and a marked increase in the amount of data available to their vets. “The data we can now collect is showing us what we do works, and that’s really satisfying,” Neroli says. “We have talked about the virtue of our practice for a long time, and now we can see it in real time.” Now celebrating 45 years in business, today AVS works for the children and grandchildren of its original clients, and is proud to be working alongside some outstanding farmers. This year’s birthday is being marked by 45 days of birthday celebrations, where the customers get the presents, including birthday cake, special deals, and supplier offers.
