Since its inception in 2010 it has been setting new standards by emphasising proactive care for cooling systems, reaping benefits for both clients and the environment. Active Refrigeration Marlborough Blenheim branch manager John Phibbs says it offers a unique approach, placing safety, sustainability and client needs at the heart of its operations. “Preventative maintenance is not just a service we offer; it’s a philosophy we live by. From day one Active Refrigeration Marlborough has championed the idea that regularly assessing, maintaining, and fine-tuning refrigeration systems is more than a cost-saving measure – it’s an investment in long-term efficiency, reliability and sustainability,” he says. While other companies might adopt a reactive approach, responding to breakdowns and malfunctions, Active Refrigeration Marlborough’s strategy centres on pre-empting potential issues. As synthesised refrigerant is a greenhouse gas, even small leaks are incredibly costly, to both the environment and the client with refrigerant costs skyrocketing in recent years, says John. John and his team draw on their technical expertise to create individualised maintenance plans that not only save money and minimise their environmental footprint but also extend the life of their refrigeration equipment. This proactive strategy aligns perfectly with Active Refrigeration Marlborough’s vision of delivering lasting value to clients that include the NZ Defence Force, Provincial Coldstores, Sanford, Sealord, T&G Global, Alliance, Pernod Ricard, Indevin, Talley’s Group, Golden Bay Fruit and Delegat to name but a few. “The result is a win-win situation where we create value for the client, building long term relationships, not just refrigeration plants,” says Grant Dewson, Nelson Branch manager. Active Refrigeration has held ISO14001 Environmental Management systems accreditation since 2017 and is now also ISO 45001 (Health and Safety management) accredited and John believes it is the only refrigeration company in New Zealand to achieve these exacting environmental and safety standards delivering transparent performance and value to its customers. A current project with Provincial Coldstores showcases this approach in action. It involves upgrading an aging refrigerant system to ammonia, which will not only enhance energy efficiency but also reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Started in 2000 Active Refrigeration’s operations now have branches New Zealand wide. It employs over 200 trade qualified refrigeration engineers and apprentices amongst a total of 230 staff across the South and North Island, each hand picked to suit both the companies safety culture and strong customer solution focus. For larger design and build projects Active Refrigeration Marlborough is backed by the technical ability of this nationwide group with the support office in Christchurch undertaking these projects with our in house design team. The Blenheim and Nelson branches assist in installation, commissioning and on-going maintenance of these large projects in the top of the south region. As examples this year Active Refrigeration has completed a multi megawatt refrigeration winery upgrade, an extensive upgrade of a dairy farm with an ice bank and invertor controlled refrigeration system for the milk vat and ventilation projects for processing industries in Nelson. John says the projects are a good example of Active Refrigeration’s goal to deliver safe, accurate, efficient, reliable, process and temperature control to help customers to produce products that are more sustainable.
